Pitch a tent in Meaford this long weekend

July 27th, 2010

This is the Meaford I know. Nestled quaintly on the Southern shore of Georgian Bay, Meaford for me means farming, it means my grandparents homestead, rolling hillsides, markets and lazy summer afternoons. It hadn’t (until recently) meant anything related to new media or electronic arts. That is, however, until I discovered Electric Eclectics ;  festival of […]

My trip to Mutek and Artengine residency in June, Part 1 – Ross Birdwise

July 22nd, 2010

This June I flew in to Ottawa from Vancouver to visit friends and family and to perform at the Mutek festival in Montreal. I was performing with the largely Ottawa-Gatineau based electronic music group if then do, of which I am a founding member (I used to live in Ottawa). Ryan Stec, Artengine’s artistic director, had recently collaborated with if then do in the past using his skills as a VJ and video artist to develop live A/V performances with the group. For this year’s Mutek, Ryan also did live visuals, in some cases using our real-time, partially improvised audio feeds to modulate the video image he had created. Ryan also invited me to do an Artengine Residency at the M70 lab while were at Mutek, but I will save that story for my next post…

This post comes from the Ghetto Blast Sound System crew members Kerry Campbell and Michael Caffrey. Kerry and Michael also make up the core of our GRL Ottawa group. Ghetto Blast has developed a mobile off-the-grid sound system that they use for free parties in the woods and urban sound interventions. In June we sent Ghetto Blast down to Subtle Technologies, a conference and festival centered on the cross section of art and technology, as the theme for this years edition was sustainability.

The GDFB festival is a 3 week long event that takes […]

Construction d’hydrophones à DAÏMÕN

June 14th, 2010

Riled up? Act up! Art and hockey

June 2nd, 2010

If I hit a puck with a stick, does it make me a hockey player? Saying that I am would be the equivalent of a typical comment we in the arts hear constantly when talking about experimental art-making “I can do that.” Common sense tells us that there is more beyond the immediacy of whatever […]
