The Living Room: Self Made: Stylo Starr’s 89 Dames

2018

The Living Room is the interactive, evolving installation space that launched in the Young Gallery in 2016. Self Made is the latest envisioning of this space, this time designed to echo some of the creative conditions that exist in an artist’s studio. The exhibition orbits around the work Hamilton-based designer and visual artist Stylo Starr’s 89 Dames, a series of photo transfer on collage that reformulate notions of beauty, specifically using images of black female celebrities featured in JET magazines of the 1950’s and 60’s. These works, along with some selections from the AGH collection will provide the inspiration for an interactive ongoing collage activity located in the centre of the Living room space. The Living Room is the interactive, evolving installation space that launched in the Young Gallery in 2016. basically 89 Dame’s kind of came out of

0:06

a need to kind of see myself in kind of

0:10

culture around me and I was really

0:14

interested in how I saw myself reflected

0:18

in visual arts going to art school going

0:22

to fine art school and like going

0:24

through art history and it’s not really

0:25

seeing a reflection of anything that

0:27

reflected my culture or anything I came

0:29

from and it came to a point where it was

0:33

kind of really down on it with myself

0:37

and my own reflection and I decided you

0:41

know I’m tired of seeing the usual

0:44

tropes of beauty that are always kind of

0:48

immortalized in visual art and pop

0:51

culture so images like Marilyn Vil or it

0:55

was the Taylor or even like Audrey

0:59

Hepburn you can see them at IKEA you can

1:01

go pick them up and bring them home and

1:02

have them in your in your living room

1:04

and I thought well what’s so different

1:07

about having more of an actual

1:10

reflection of myself like a real

1:13

tangible reflection so I had a lot of

1:16

imagery that I loved growing up my mom

1:19

used to collect magazines and

1:21

essence magazines and ebony magazines

1:24

and a lot of that stuff started popping

1:27

back up again online and I started

1:29

collecting a lot of the imagery and I

1:31

came across a stockpile of beautiful

1:33

women that I was like yeah I could

1:35

really use this and the series just kind

1:39

of evolved from there and the number 89

1:42

the number was totally arbitrary and it

1:45

just happened to be the amount of women

1:46

that I had and the the number sounded

1:49

right and the the term Dame’s was

1:52

something that I always really loved it

1:54

was very it’s a very dated term but um

1:57

89 day and she sounded right and the

2:00

energy kind of flowed really well with

2:03

the title and I just kept working on it

2:06

it just kept evolving on its own and you

2:09

know I’d sit in my living room I’d sit

2:10

in my bedroom I’d sit anywhere I could

2:12

set up my studio

2:14

and that was the the magical space where

2:17

89 teams could come to be so I’m really

2:20

proud of it I love each seven every one

2:23

of them like they’re my sisters or my

2:24

auntie’s or like my mom’s there they’re

2:27

my family so it’s kind of nice to see

2:29

them all displayed up in like a living

2:31

room space now and amongst you know

2:34

other prominent white women I wanted to

2:36

be able to judge suppose that and see

2:38

that they can exist in this space just

2:41

as much as any other woman basically

2:43

it’s a really humbling experience to see

2:47

something that I kind of took as my own

2:50

personal therapy in a way now a way for

2:56

people to kind of interact and

2:58

communicate with each other it’s a

3:00

really great feeling and I’m really

3:03

interested to see how people will not

3:06

only make their own connections with the

3:08

material that will be there and provided

3:11

but also how they’re going to respond to

3:14

the art working of space through that as

3:17

well and just to kind of see that

3:18

connection of their own experience with

3:21

the experience that’s already around in

3:22

the living room space and just seeing

3:25

that connection kind of happened there

3:26

it’s gonna be really interesting to see

3:27

the stories that are gonna kind of be

3:29

made there when you experience 89 names

3:32

you will be stepping into a room of

3:36

energy color movement and just

3:41

incredible magic you’ll feel it you

3:46

might not hear it but you’ll definitely

3:48

see it and you’ll be able to interact

3:49

with each and every one and every woman

3:51

will have a story for you so I look

3:55

forward to seeing you all there
