Edward Nkole responds to the Divination Container (Mboko) in the exhibition “Stories to Tell: Africans and the Diaspora Respond to the Lang Collection.”
Guest curators Marc Epprecht and Allison Goebel developed a community-based exhibition, “Stories to Tell: Africans and the Diaspora Respond to the Lang Collection,” that challenges the problematic history of colonial-era appropriation, collection and display of African art in Western museums. They invited members of the African and diasporic communities at Queen’s, and in Kingston and the region to select a piece or pieces from the collection and respond in a personal way.Edward Nkole responds to the Divination Container (Mboko) in the exhibition “Stories to Tell: Africans and the Diaspora Respond to the Lang Collection.”

so the divination container on Boko is
0:09
fascinating to me
0:11
it’s a
0:13
of the power of art and how artform
0:17
serve an interpretive purpose in various
0:21
cultures of the world the gourd mature
0:25
fruit of the calabash tree would be used
0:28
by the diviner to link to Liuba history
0:32
connecting with ancestral spirits and
0:35
seeking meaning for the present and the
0:38
future not only is it a spectacular
0:43
piece of art but looking at the deeper
0:45
meaning or implication of the moko
0:48
container calls for deeper reflection
0:52
Humanity of all cultures has sought to
0:55
answer the deep philosophical questions
0:58
of why we’re here the meaning of what we
1:01
encounter on a day to day basis I want
1:03
the future holds for us
1:05
so at the centre of this experience I
1:08
decisions how we make them the
1:10
influences on the decisions many shape
1:14
or affect individual community and
1:17
national destinies such as the power
1:20
exerted by them boko in particular
1:23
communities of the Luba people of
1:26
Central Africa my own ancestry derives
1:30
from the Luba Kingdom from where the
1:33
patriarchs of the Bemba kingdom of
1:36
present-day Zambia originated so Luba
1:40
spirituality permit permeated
1:43
traditional practices of the Bemba
1:46
shaping Kingdom decisions because entire
1:50
communities adhered to and subscribed to
1:53
the controlling influence of ancestral
1:57
spirits and their controlling influence
2:01
was exerted for four centuries but this
2:03
influence would only be overtaken by the
2:07
advent of a different kind of
2:08
spirituality the entrance of
2:10
missionaries and the Gospel message
2:13
served to challenge many traditional
2:16
practices while missionaries had a
2:19
profound impact on traditional practices
2:23
realigning allegiances
2:26
undermining the controlling power of
2:29
traditional religion the influence of
2:32
them boku and traditional African
2:36
spiritus is still significant to the
2:39
present day a question I would ask is
2:43
does the vocal provide answers to the
2:46
deep questions in the heart of humanity
2:59
you
