Celebrating Local Arts - PRINT

2022

As part of the AGGV’s 2021 Celebration of Art — a new virtual program throughout the month of July — we have joined forces with arts and community groups in the CRD. We have collaborated with these fantastic organizations to create videos that highlight the important work that they are doing in the arts community. These short clips include tours of studio and gallery spaces, interviews with artists, members, and administrators working with these institutions, and even one virtual “Imagination Station”, which invites you to get creative from the comfort of your home. Watch the whole series to learn about all the great things that local arts organizations are doing in your community.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is located on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples, today known as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. We extend our gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to live and work on this territory.

i’m sarah howarth and i’m with um

0:03

artist run center nonprofit society

0:05

called print

0:06

and what we do is we’re bringing

0:08

awareness of printmaking

0:10

to the crd area and across vancouver

0:12

island and our mandate is really to

0:14

connect printmakers and

0:16

one in the gulf islands and across

0:17

vancouver island so we can all get to

0:19

know each other

0:20

and we can promote printmaking to those

0:22

that aren’t very aware of what it is

0:25

so one of our big programming pieces is

0:27

we highlight a print artist

0:29

every four months in what we call the

0:31

print gallery

0:32

and it’s essentially a hard copy gallery

0:35

featuring a solo printmaker

0:37

they do an original piece that gets

0:39

printed

0:40

hand printed on the back of the gallery

0:43

so that

0:43

we can share original art with

0:46

with the public it’s accessible and

0:50

it’s often done with a lot of passion

0:53

we’re in the print studio right now so

0:55

we do offer some studio space to print

0:57

makers

0:58

and our past three galleries have had

1:00

the artist the print artist come into

1:02

the space

1:03

and print their edition and these we do

1:05

addition of 50

1:06

so we have 50 original pieces to sell at

1:09

a very accessible price

1:11

but we also do a whole bunch of offsets

1:13

which are commercial printing

1:15

and they’re all free and so we hand

1:17

those out through art stores bookstores

1:19

framing shops and and just by word of

1:22

mouth

1:24

so we you know we get people interested

1:26

and excited about printmaking

1:28

through a gallery that you don’t

1:29

actually have to visit um and come into

1:31

a space

1:32

we actually bring the gallery to you so

1:34

these are the print galleries

1:36

and and what they are is their

1:39

information

1:40

about what printmaking is so every uh

1:42

four months we put one of these out

1:44

we’ve done three volumes artists apply

1:48

to be in this show and in the print

1:49

gallery because it’s it’s just like a

1:51

regular exhibition

1:53

so they apply to us we go through an

1:55

application process

1:56

and then the artists are awarded

2:00

essentially gallery space and so this

2:03

one

2:03

is zoe silliers and she does a lot of

2:06

litho she does a lot of poetry

2:09

and she works with text and so what she

2:12

did is on the

2:13

inside is the original lino and wood

2:16

carvings

2:17

that she did and then she printed and

2:19

auditioned them for

2:20

50 of them the what we call offset

2:23

prints are free

2:24

and so we’ll mail one to you you can

2:27

always pop down the studio when we’re

2:28

open and pick them up from us directly

2:30

we do have them at local art stores in

2:32

victoria

2:34

as well as some used bookstores um but

2:36

we are kind of expanding that

2:38

so this month’s our artist is natasha

2:41

van netten

2:42

she’s been spending her time printing

2:44

last weekend and today we’re finishing

2:46

up the print run of 50.

2:48

my name is natasha van netten and i’m a

2:50

local artist from victoria

2:53

i’m also the third artist for

2:56

the victoria print society’s print

2:59

gallery edition yeah so so these are

3:02

the distributed print gallery this one

3:05

is the one that i’m working on

3:07

currently uh it folds open um

3:10

to an interview inside and then the

3:12

print

3:13

is on the inside there and that’s

3:18

that’s the north there so um this

3:20

particular piece

3:21

is um coming from

3:24

my own practice i i focus on

3:27

whales and whale research and so this

3:32

image is actually a location on the

3:34

north coast sort of going up towards

3:36

kitimat and you have the

3:38

inside passage going through and so it’s

3:40

an area of

3:42

high activity for humans for boats for

3:45

sea life

3:46

and everything is sort of converging in

3:48

that area and even though the the

3:50

passageways are very small it’s sort of

3:52

a hive of activity that i wanted to

3:54

highlight

3:54

the different uses and

3:58

so i started off by making a lino

4:01

cut plate which is here we ran them

4:04

through last week

4:06

printing them in the gallery space and

4:09

today we are

4:13

layering the embossing on top and the

4:15

embossing is what

4:16

it’s representing the um the undersea

4:19

contour lines that are going through

4:21

those spaces and showing the depth

4:23

[Music]

4:25

creating sort of a map but um focusing

4:28

more on the underwater elements

4:29

like if it were a map for a whale for

4:32

example

4:33

i applied to their art call it was an

4:36

open art call last i think it was in

4:37

september

4:39

and i uh so i just i just put together a

4:43

submission and i applied

4:44

and um was really excited to have this

4:47

opportunity to

4:49

um create this print and to start to

4:51

sort of branch out with my own work as

4:52

well

4:53

and uh yeah which is sort of neat

4:56

because that’s the

4:57

um the purpose of the print society is

4:59

to sort of extend and reach out to

5:02

people that are not within that group

5:04

and so

5:05

to come into it is really quite quite

5:08

cool

5:09

but we’ve really evolved it into being

5:10

this because it initially was gonna be a

5:12

whole bunch of stuff about printmaking

5:13

not just one artist

5:15

and then we were talking about like why

5:16

don’t we run it like a show like why

5:18

don’t we run it on the same premise that

5:19

you would if you were applying

5:21

to a gallery and so we have submissions

5:24

we have

5:24

the artist statements we have the

5:26

interview which the interview is

5:28

essentially the artist talk

5:29

so we have all of it it’s just in this

5:32

paper

5:33

format right

6:02

you
