In partnership with UVic’s Indigenous Education Department, our School Workshops crew was back in schools, connecting with young learners throughout the fall of 2022! The 2022 workshops were inspired by our latest Teacher Resource Guide Honouring, featuring artworks by three contemporary Indigenous artists, with a cedar weaving activity facilitated by guest artist Tyrone Elliott. As we came to the end of another semester we were once again joined by John Harris, Elders & Indigenous Knowledge Facilitator from School District 61, who facilitated a closing circle.
As we prepare for these school workshops we’re asking questions such as; How can we truly embody the First Peoples Principles of Learning in this work? In what ways can we share artwork (from our current Teacher Resource Guide) that will spark curiosity and excitement to learn more about the work of Indigenous artists? And of course, how will we show up in ways that ensure young learners feel deeply respected, seen, and heard?
This is our sixth year collaborating with UVic’s Indigenous Education Department. It is an honor to learn and work together, and to be part of making sure Indigenous perspectives are celebrated and honored in local schools.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is located on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples, today known as the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. We extend our gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to live and work on this territory.
