Adorned Exhibition Opening Celebration Speeches

2022

Highlights from the speeches at the opening celebration for Adorned — a group exhibition presenting style and identity beyond aesthetics and beauty, exploring cultural expressions, histories, futurisms and materiality at the AGGV (curated by Jaimie Isaac).

Artists from the Reverberations exhibition (curated by Nicole Stanbridge, Heng Wu and Mel Granley) that opened earlier in the Spring were also acknowledged and celebrated during this event, as the AGGV opened its doors back to major in-person events in June 2022.

before we start with the welcoming and

0:02

0:04

acknowledge that the art gallery of

0:06

greater victoria is located on the

0:08

traditional territories of the lakongan

0:11

peoples today known as the ascoimalt and

0:13

sanghi’s nation we extend our

0:15

appreciation for the opportunity to live

0:18

and learn on this territory so to honor

0:21

the land and protocol i respectfully

0:23

invite seonghei’s

0:25

member

0:27

florence dick to welcome

0:29

us here on this territory thank you

0:31

mcwitch

0:32

florence for being with us here today

0:35

and this is just as a small gift of uh

0:38

gratitude

0:41

thanks quiche i want to thank the art

0:45

art gallery for doing proper protocol to

0:48

our people to our ancestors

0:51

to our elders to our youth

0:53

today

0:55

it’s always important to open up events

0:57

in a good way

0:58

and

0:59

in a good way an indigenous way it’s

1:02

always acknowledging the ancestors of

1:04

the land

1:05

and my job as a liaison

1:08

i come

1:10

and i do this portion and welcome people

1:13

in a proper way

1:15

a way that was taught to me by an elder

1:18

and my job

1:20

what i do

1:21

and how i ground people to the land

1:24

that our ancestors walked on

1:27

you know

1:28

they walk and they continue to walk as

1:31

we hold those names

1:33

to this day

1:35

and that’s a big honor

1:38

to be here

1:39

and have them in the space with you

1:42

[Music]

[Music]

2:01

thank you florence for that uh that

2:04

wonderful opening and welcome

2:06

um as a newcomer to victoria i would

2:08

like to acknowledge and thank the

2:10

clunkin people for allowing me to live

2:12

work and play on your territory i look

2:14

forward to exploring it and learning

2:16

more

2:17

so some of you will know um some of you

2:19

may not know i came made my way to aggv

2:23

as of monday um via the art gallery of

2:25

nova scotia so i’ve moved from halifax

2:28

all the way across the country i was at

2:30

the argument of nova scotia for about

2:32

five and a half years prior to that i

2:34

was in vancouver for a decade so coming

2:36

back to the west coast is like coming

2:38

home for me and it feels very good and

2:40

i’m very excited about the prospects and

2:42

the things that we’re going to do at the

2:44

aggv

2:45

i really look forward to getting to know

2:47

all of you better and to working

2:49

together to really create meaningful art

2:51

based experiences for people because

2:52

that’s what we’re about

2:54

and tonight is absolutely no exception

2:56

and it’s i have to say strange my first

2:59

big in-person opening

3:01

in this pandemic reality and it’s really

3:04

nice to have people back together

3:06

looking at the real thing looking at the

3:08

art and being able to socialize and talk

3:10

about it and i’m really pleased that

3:12

we’re

3:12

able to open two shows tonight adorned

3:15

and reverberations

3:17

i’d like to

3:18

begin by acknowledging all the artists

3:20

who are here and those that aren’t here

3:22

um we would not do this work without you

3:25

um i had the pleasure of meeting many of

3:27

you upstairs which was lovely

3:29

um you make such a contribution to not

3:32

just exhibitions and programming but to

3:34

our lives in general and we’re grateful

3:36

for that um

3:38

we really are going to strive to have

3:40

great conversations through art and this

3:42

is just the beginning i hope of what

3:43

will become a post-pandemic reality that

3:46

we can get together and do these things

3:49

so uh thank you all for joining us

3:51

tonight so

3:52

i know we all missed this

3:55

so much occasions like this

3:57

i guess we just miss the seeing the real

4:00

things

4:03

to see the real thing that is why

4:05

museums and other galleries exist and

4:08

why we still need them the aggv holds

4:12

over 20 000 pieces of collections

4:15

collections are not acquired to be

4:17

sitting in the board

4:19

each piece has a life has a history they

4:22

need to be seen to be added onto

4:26

to be

4:27

to be engaged with to keep them alive

4:30

this is the whole idea behind the

4:32

reverberations project

4:34

we invited artists from our local

4:37

communities to review our connections

4:40

and to give their response

4:42

and these amazing audience they selected

4:45

works from our collection which they

4:48

felt a resonance resonance to

4:51

and

4:52

expressed their own interpretation and

4:55

reflections

4:56

through their unique and special

4:59

artistic approaches

5:02

we are deeply thankful to them they

5:04

brought in fresh eyes fresh minds they

5:07

added new voices and the new meanings

5:10

they also created conversations and

5:12

prompt thinking

5:14

so thank you all for your wonderful work

5:16

thank you for your great efforts to make

5:18

this gallery a more meaningful place and

5:21

i hope you all enjoy tonight and enjoy

5:24

the reverberations thank you

5:27

so it’s now my pleasure to share um my

5:31

first curated exhibition at the agtv so

5:34

adorned an interdisciplinary group

5:36

exhibition bringing together artists and

5:39

designers and historical

5:42

ancestors objects

5:44

to speak to histories and futurisms

5:47

through ways and wills to be adorned

5:51

the deeply considered connections to

5:53

process and material have

5:55

interdisciplinary approaches imbued with

5:58

meanings beyond what is seen

6:00

aesthetically the exhibition design

6:03

methodology was to have sustainability

6:06

in mind

6:08

so now i’d like to thank the artists

6:10

these institutions gallery spaces

6:12

museums really would not exist without

6:15

the amazing work of artists and

6:18

cultural ties so i just wanted to thank

6:21

all of the artists in the exhibition

6:23

they’re not all here right now but i

6:25

want you to spend some time with your

6:27

work

6:28

and

6:29

enjoy yourself tonight good evening

6:32

everybody

6:33

my name is kenneth cameron

6:35

and i am originally from kenya i’m a

6:38

producer of victoria eco fashion week

6:40

and what we do is to promote and support

6:43

and create awareness about

6:44

sustainability in sustainable fashions

6:47

work with small designers

6:49

getting started with what they do

6:51

today it’s a very special day because we

6:53

celebrate a new collaboration with the

6:55

art gallery of

6:57

the greater victoria so we

6:59

say thank you so much to these audience

7:01

and this community and this institution

7:03

for welcoming us to collaborate with you

7:05

and give young people like us who are

7:09

pursuing their

7:10

dreams and pushing something that we

7:13

believe can change our climate because

7:15

as you all know that

7:17

fashion is a huge polluter of

7:19

environment and

7:21

everybody has a stake or has a

7:23

responsibility to take so my

7:25

responsibility what i do is to

7:28

to do to produce more of sustainable

7:30

fashion and uh where people are able to

7:32

recycle and reuse and uh refurb us give

7:35

a new life so i hope you will come you

7:37

enjoy the fashion show that we’re gonna

7:39

have be sure we should be showcasing

7:41

some of the designers that we produced

7:43

recently you can see their work and

7:47

hope you enjoy and have a lovely evening

7:49

thank you so much

7:51
