2018 Bollywood Monster Orchestra preparation for #BollywoodMonster Mashup

2020

Get behind the scenes to see the magic of BMO (Bollywood Monster Orchestra) happening in the preparation for the 2018 #BollywoodMonster Mashup – the LARGEST South Asian Festival in Canada.

The #Bollywood Monster Orchestra is a high-powered combination of traditional Bollywood melodies and Western rock instruments. BMO is as old as #Bollywood Monster Mashup itself, and over the years, it has featured a variety of instruments from numerous cultural backgrounds. For their performance in 2018, BMO was challenged to incorporate new language, Hindi, into their performance, and they’ve done it competently and professionally, as usual. Though BMO is constantly evolving, one thing stays the same from year to year – their amazing combination of music and talents.

2018 BMO included the following amazing performers:

Brandon Rozen
He’s been with the Bollywood Monster Mashup since the beginning in 2011, both as a musical arranger and a singer (both Hindi and English!). Brandon has been a professional singer and musician ever since childhood, performed both locally and internationally, and this is one of the most fun things he’s ever been a part of.

Stephanie Braganza
Stephanie Braganza is a powerhouse vocalist whose performances helped her win a Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Live Artist. The vocalist has performed in a wide array of settings throughout her career, including a private event at the Art Gallery of Ontario which was attended by former president George W. Bush, and at the MuchMusic Video Awards. An outspoken animal rights activist, her latest music video; “Chains of Silence” has won two 2017 Global Music awards for “Best Female Vocalist” and “Best Music Video,” and has received support from Bif Naked, Tony Kanal (No Doubt) and PETA.

Lindsay Clark
Lindsay has been playing piano/keyboards since the age of 7. Her work as a musician has taken her across Canada and the U.S. She doubles on vocals, acoustic guitar, and banjo.
She played session keyboards on Sarah McDougall’s WCMA-winning album ‘Grand Canyon’. Lindsay played keyboards for Shiloh from 2009-2012, and for Canadian 80s rockers Platinum Blonde for two RECENT years, from 2010-2012. With Shiloh, Lindsay performed on the MuchMusic Video Awards, and at JunoFest, and opened for such notable artists as Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas, and Justin Bieber.

Lydia Wilton
From Kingston, Ontario, Lydia Wilton is an independent producer, songwriter, and the frontman of touring rock band Nameless Friends. A powerful vocalist with a wide indie rock, alternative, and folk repertoire, #BollywoodMonster Mashup is her first time performing in Hindi!

Olaf Szester
Olaf Szester is a Toronto based percussionist/drummer and composer. He has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with artists such as Tom Cochrane, Skydiggers, Great Big Sea, Hey Rosetta and AKON. Currently Olaf is the drummer for Toronto’s based high energy punk alternative band BROOMFILLER, who have released and toured several albums to date and a dark alternative pop band called Gelax. Furthermore, Olaf can be found on the self-titled album of the progressive rock band Duck Duck Goose.

Riley O’Connor
Riley O’Connor is a sought after Canadian drummer with a Humber Music background who is established as an international touring musician and session player in genres ranging from jazz, r&b, pop and country to heavy rock.
Riley plays frequently with critically acclaimed Toronto artists and composers such as Brownman Ali, Snaggle, Michael Schatte, Chris Antonik, Jake Wilkinson and Jordana Talsky. He also writes and records his own music as a member of the pop duo CR Extraodinaire. In addition to collaborating with original artists, Riley enjoys providing the rhythmic foundation for The Vegas North Orchestra which accompanies a variety of premiere pop and jazz tribute acts.
Riley’s drumming is captured on recordings from Canada’s top studios such as CBC, Phase One and Coalition Music and has been featured on The Edge 102.1, Much Music, CBC Television and Lionsgate Pictures.

0:35

yeah it was nerve-racking because you’re

0:40

performing in front of thousands of

0:42

people very challenging because it

0:44

really brings you out your comfort zone

0:46

it’s a mash-up Bollywood hindi songs mix

0:50

with my English pop or rock I speak

0:54

English and I speak French but I

0:55

honestly don’t speak Hindi so it was

0:57

really an exercise in testing my ears

0:59

figuring out that I listen to music to

1:00

the original performer so I can pick up

1:02

their accent their inflections

1:03

everything else it was kind of a shock

1:05

at first

1:06

singing Hindi is rather difficult there

1:09

are a lot of intricacies that I was not

1:12

prepared for time in Mohini yeah okay

1:22

what about this one there’s a there’s a

1:24

part where I say like bird bird death

1:26

star dot the structures are really

1:31

unique and there’s a lot of Eastern

1:34

influence that’s much different than the

1:36

background that I have and that they’ll

1:37

be like an extra bar they’ll be extra

1:39

beats sonically there’s a lot of Eastern

1:41

stuff which is much different than a lot

1:44

of the music that I normally play for me

1:45

is the joy is always networking with

1:47

other great musicians like Olaf and like

1:50

the rest of the the bmm who work as a

1:51

team the fact that everyone has put in a

1:54

considerable amount of work on their own

1:55

to get together some pretty challenging

1:57

stuff says a lot for the skill level

2:00

with everyone on stage the band’s a lot

2:02

of fun all the people that are doing it

2:03

are fun the crowd is amazing

2:05

it’s very professionally done just like

2:08

you some part use the tracks and then

2:10

you do the show

2:23

bollywood monster mashup is a level

2:26

where they showcase only the best it’s a

2:28

huge audience one of the biggest sins

2:31

that I’ve ever performed in front of

2:32

always Drive there’s always passion

2:34

they’re working on the same team in the

2:36

same direction so it’s great to be a

2:37

part of a team who’s so goal-oriented in

2:40

and wants to bring out fun and they they

2:42

have fun while doing so it’s a very

2:44

abusive

2:45

thanks to this I’m able to connect with

2:47

people who understands music and play it

2:48

and just the general community of

2:51

Toronto Canada is full of color full of

2:53

tradition there’s so much entertainment

2:55

is so much mixed to the so much flavor

2:57

and that’s really what the show is in a

2:58

way I’m so happy because I’m getting to

3:00

learn so much from everybody what really

3:02

makes it fun is when we get that energy

3:03

back from the audience and that’s that’s

3:06

why we do it
