This session makes us realize that we “the audience”, the spectators in the movie theatre, have the opportunity to watch the different ways in which reality can be presented. Time works in our favor, mainly because we need it to better understand the daily life of some characters. And if we do not understand other languages… this is a very familiar question for us Canadians who are also from elsewhere.April 5, 2015

can you talk a little bit of a book
0:10
Torah I am and how these because I know
0:13
that you were really close to busy later
0:15
but also how is how was it conceived and
0:18
why say that you wanted to make a film
0:21
about mental illness all album I can
0:25
speak more support from the virtual
0:27
server but with a little story the
0:30
intention of the director was to our to
0:32
portray the metal-insulator house
0:35
especially hour ago studies pursuing
0:38
hair like for many years from even in a
0:40
couple of generations before so it’s
0:42
kind of magical and because he merely
0:44
this comment like a schizophrenic he’s a
0:47
brilliant moment you like that so that’s
0:50
why the correct their errors unlike you
0:52
i interrupting are the best moments of
0:56
her life and affecting it affecting her
0:58
a regulation system is a community-run
1:02
so I mean in japanese so this into her
1:04
to make appearances were afraid that’s
1:08
why you Pastor the Japanese are their
1:10
stories my daddy for dinner I Spartacus
1:15
I was a Julia the interior ascaso for
1:17
that p.m. two years ago so I was a very
1:21
familiar with the process and I kind of
1:23
talk about the information about the
1:25
foreigner and within your whole
1:27
community that which is in the Brazilian
1:30
over here also but it’s also very
1:31
Universal intervals alright and yeah I
1:36
have been preserved in the Northeast for
1:40
almost year and in the Northeast there’s
1:44
a type of music actually copy
1:46
hopeful home and when I moved back here
1:49
I was shocked to see that there was a
1:51
huge full C in Toronto with incredible
1:55
artists and it happens really regularly
1:58
and a lot of artists artists people from
2:05
the community members from the key needy
2:06
who aren’t even Brazilian are really
2:09
into it and so I just wanted you two to
2:13
do peace in the music that was played
2:16
with original health in the film which
2:18
was really special because it’s rare
2:20
that gets made like from that
2:23
traditional Tyson and a little over the
2:26
time before me ah sure add the foreigner
2:30
is kind of cheese I thought it would be
2:34
interesting to make the story about
2:36
foreigner in their own city and how
2:39
that’s reflective of some some some
2:44
experiences you have especially the
2:46
facing tanto yeah I me sad it was a
2:49
white eating in committee sometimes when
2:52
they were seeing people’s be Jewish it
2:55
sanitation and that was actually yeah
2:57
that was intentional um I debated about
3:01
whether or not to include subtitles i
3:05
love feedback about but it was actually
3:09
ah yeah i wasn’t sure that I felt when
3:15
they were in if you lost a part of the
3:18
reality for peace and yeah I guess
3:24
indian but I look back I think I
3:27
decision because this also how
3:30
experiences the entire situation so yeah
3:34
I’ve already interested
3:36
like when I first screen it privately to
3:39
a lot of the people in the field like
3:41
the Brazilians reaction to a number
3:43
things like there’s kind of an inside
3:45
joke cuz anymore is really making fun of
3:51
yeah okay somebody feeling and how would
4:02
you be came to uh you know peace is well
4:05
as usually when your home folder with
4:08
this subject is accomplished choice or
4:12
the coalface to go towards vitamins and
4:15
love for Scott solutions but I think
4:20
there’s so much more violence in wars
4:22
what’s going on many of the reasons why
4:25
we are suffering in Mexico what’s going
4:27
on with mega traffic comes to the fact
4:29
that all the choices we have taken in
4:32
order to start driving traffic it’s just
4:34
making it worse all those conservative
4:36
choices we have been taking in order to
4:39
stop it it just make it it stronger so
4:41
we are Trina a market we are creating
4:43
our feeds is huge monster so that’s why
4:48
I certain to have this approach towards
4:51
a program and there is no shoes a priest
4:53
is not because I was trying to insult
4:56
religion or anything it just because
4:58
it’s one of the obvious institutions in
5:00
the country
5:01
an American Civil this institution and
5:03
the point is that even that institution
5:06
has been taken by the library traffic as
5:09
it has happened in Italy a second in
5:11
Colombia too so I don’t have taken a
5:14
pre-socratic in an engineer pretty much
5:16
everybody’s working for it now so i used
5:19
to choose because well it was a very
5:21
strong symbol of foreign culture to a
5:24
night night it was perfect one as we see
5:27
the very first shot to be handed on
5:30
church I mean sub church with burial
5:32
place all falling apart so it’s like
5:34
this power behind everything another
5:37
same time now where can I do yeah so is
5:43
there a Chilean in okay so okay the
5:47
content is about my best try to prove
5:52
that in Chile people have been making
5:55
the same film for almost 100 years
6:05
especially
6:07
so the idea was to prove that the makers
6:12
are depicting the lefties and righties
6:15
since 1920 85 and about the deform what
6:21
I try to do was to use well to walk away
6:24
from big productions with gigantic crews
6:28
big budget and big equipment and I don’t
6:34
try to bring cinema closer to other art
6:38
forms like poetry for instance that
6:42
going to use a pen and a paper so I try
6:46
to care to keep the quality of the film
6:51
as a youtube film were like very big
6:55
held and really low fire yeah so that
7:00
was good and well this film was made
7:08
while i was in cuban and i was very
7:12
trying to acquire door so i was in
7:14
eastern Cuba very remote part of the
7:17
country and I meta glad for this elderly
7:19
man and I was touched by his world
7:22
that’s very sort of solitude with its
7:25
own piece of time and he barely had any
7:28
contact with other humans and so I was
7:32
sort of a dog
7:32
ending this and then when I went into
7:35
the editing of the film I started to
7:37
think about why it was that I was so
7:40
drawn to him because I think often as
7:42
filmmakers my belief is that in my
7:47
experience I’m drawn to people that I
7:50
guess I see some part of myself in them
7:52
and so I realized that this loneliness
7:56
that I had seen in this man or the
7:58
solitude was something that I also felt
8:01
through that I also experienced and so
8:02
we were sort of united by this but then
8:05
there was this impossibility of ever
8:07
really connecting and so that’s what the
8:11
film is about is representing this kind
8:12
of dance between two lonely individuals
8:16
beautifully done wheezes yeah here’s my
8:22
rights and they make me sick I and I
8:25
hate a lot of merchants of people so I
8:28
avoid anything like that as a killer is
8:31
to work setting up amusement rice and
8:34
people always kill themselves and we
8:37
always laugh cuz with no kids laugh at
8:39
that kind of thing and uh so yeah I just
8:42
stood the camera into this right at the
8:46
X the big Canadian exhibition that we
8:49
have here and I just you know I just
8:54
recorded that I I felt you know I always
8:57
think that he’ll make me hell makes me
8:59
laugh like the idea of a place
9:01
there’s frames and crowd ously
9:03
absolutely hilarious is like really
9:06
idiotic to me so you know I just
9:08
celebrated that thank you
9:17
oh ok
9:22
i get i get a
9:24
for work and large amounts of people
9:27
really freaked me out that’s that I’m
9:28
not saying I’m a misanthrope although
9:30
I’ve many of accuse me of that and the
9:32
bottom line but I will deny it don’t
9:34
tell my dying day okay um somebody yep
9:41
shown the back and the museum Cynara and
9:44
everyone this is a wonderful program a
9:46
lot of really strong amazing work a lot
9:49
of work on screen and it’s just a
9:52
wonderful to see this collection of
9:55
toronto-based and canadian-based work
9:57
it’s amazing thank you thank you a
10:00
Canadian authorities in vancouver camino
10:05
montreal and i said to know montreal and
10:08
toronto toronto toronto so yeah i met
10:12
somebody else only makers are going to
10:14
be here when I hundra now is even
10:16
between Colombia Venezuela he’s a
10:18
working with a big big project and my
10:22
question is for Lara aye I think your
10:26
film is beautiful and it’s just another
10:30
level is very well done and I’m just
10:33
kind of questioning that what I saw what
10:37
your to the introduction of yourself in
10:41
it as first your boys by making the
10:44
question why are you thinking and your
10:46
toes at the at the end and I don’t know
10:49
if I self and I’m missing another one
10:51
but I’m just interested in
10:54
it is that like that choice of including
10:57
a bit of yourself and in it in
10:59
comparison to all of it yeah it’s
11:03
something that I’m still questioning
11:04
whether that was the right choice or not
11:07
because on one hand you know if I would
11:12
have taken that presents out I think it
11:15
would have just been a very clean
11:16
portrait of this man in his space but
11:21
that wasn’t really the heart of what I
11:23
wanted to represent what I wanted to
11:25
represent if I go to the very first
11:27
image where there’s these two little
11:28
lights that are moving around in the
11:31
dark it was I wanted to talk about this
11:33
this dance or this space between the
11:37
lights and so I felt that I was part of
11:45
the film and so that moment when I ask
11:48
Eduardo what are you thinking it’s like
11:51
I recognize that on one hand it breaks
11:53
this world and it breaks the silence but
11:56
I also chose to include it because I
11:58
felt that it was such a concrete way of
12:01
representing I asked him and he never
12:04
answers you know and so that was kind of
12:07
the crux of of the story sorry but to me
12:11
it does answer to me door sensor because
12:14
his his gaze tells you so much saw him
12:18
even saying anything and that’s I agree
12:21
that the next shot you have to have that
12:23
other shelters will be perfect
12:27
oh yes please yeah my question was put a
12:32
foreigner actually had to say I really
12:36
enjoyed the film but i wanted to share
12:38
something really fun ashley everything
12:40
Lucy cuz ever you relate to the
12:42
character because actually how I do shoe
12:45
today this kind of like exactly actually
12:51
I was walking Thursday and I was walking
12:56
down college on the way to an event but
12:58
I was birdie I said I’ll go get
13:01
something to eat around here you know
13:02
there must be some way to eat some
13:03
walking around and then I’d like see
13:06
this like this like party one on this
13:08
little restaurant so there’s no fun you
13:11
know so I go in I saw look at the window
13:14
look at the same plane is Brazilian
13:17
music hello music hello music
13:20
Wow awesome perfect i’ll just go ahead
13:23
and they’re just sometimes wait is over
13:25
so I walk in there and it’s like i see
13:28
like you know girls making out oh wow
13:33
this is so cool girls both a
13:38
little bit annoying mine so they don’t
13:41
like you know i see i see her and she
13:44
was a person to anyway that’s community
13:46
look interesting something she can be
13:48
pretty silly antics as well be living
13:51
below i ask you to be teaching our dash
13:53
go home there’s a time long enough she’s
13:56
talking full of each is another problem
13:58
start dancing and had a great time and
14:01
then she told me
14:08
I’m scared and I see the seller is
14:10
basically like it feels like surreal
14:21
so it’s not a short story but I think
14:23
it’s a great film and it almost like
14:27
these people I always by Iron Chef this
14:30
is like if you want to that’s great it’s
14:36
really funny because I could I need
14:38
every single person in the same
14:43
community from Xavier office afaria now
14:46
looking at faith ends with every single
14:48
one is in the background and analysis
14:52
and I put in the community and I can see
14:55
how you hadn’t come from your community
14:56
support and it’s really amazing to watch
14:59
it’s pretty great lateral and also
15:04
continued on the foreigner that I really
15:08
enjoyed and as a brazilian i can i can i
15:12
can really understand why i chose not to
15:15
put the subtitles because when he is
15:19
talking with the form the brazilian guys
15:22
talking with this morning he’s trying to
15:24
get the for a guy to go and get a girl
15:28
dance and but he’s got his hand like
15:31
that and then you shoot the end and you
15:33
can see and then the guy understood that
15:35
he’s asking him dance but that wasn’t
15:37
related and so as a brazilian i know
15:40
that what’s happening and then you can
15:43
really relate to the foreigner in that
15:46
aspect us and he just misunderstands and
15:49
goes for it and if it was if it was
15:52
translated then the people who don’t
15:54
speak Portuguese would know more than
15:57
they want a foreigner moves so I
15:59
appreciate the fact that if you
16:01
understand Portuguese yeah I don’t know
16:03
that he’s not anybody I’m dance but if
16:05
you don’t you might might agree with the
16:08
corner when he gets his it was really
16:10
neat that would a funny story up at them
16:14
shooting it because as you mentioned it
16:16
was such a new project and dem most of
16:20
the cast and the Astros on sets but
16:23
Portuguese except for Nathaniel is the
16:26
lead and then all a lot of the crew
16:29
didn’t misspeak Cochise and although
16:31
there was a script the riddim of who
16:33
stars as that his partner was add the
16:37
vanilla like Nikita and he was being
16:39
really funny and so everyone would be
16:41
laughing try not to laugh and every like
16:44
the GOP and the Daniel had no idea what
16:48
you think dagger times it was like the
16:51
diamond look at the film played out of
16:52
Austin on the set and an end another my
16:58
favorite story of the stat ilysm you had
17:01
this focus puller just wasn’t like
17:05
feeling the music she’s just really
17:07
stairwell the entire shoot but I caught
17:10
it on the very end the very last take
17:12
dancing to the music and like grabbing
17:15
another person from the set and dancing
17:18
and there’s a yeah everybody is going to
17:21
fall off yeah I gotta never told me how
17:25
to dance for robust here and to chi
17:29
okay we have to rub it out I’ll
17:31
coordinate just one of us easily have to
17:34
update for you tell charge upon us okay
17:39
see how do you find us work starting
17:42
Louise’s mother I borrow other people’s
17:45
cameras and an actor and yeah I just
17:50
steal people’s stuff and music well this
17:58
is a work that I mean while i was in
17:59
school into this so it was the school
18:02
finance yeah is to read 20 and to invest
18:09
on the 20 i’m still waiting for the
18:13
budget sort of made it up there’s not
18:21
much that it’s too late but I had a bit
18:28
of grant money but mostly it was from
18:30
fans and finnaly the community and a lot
18:33
of people just prefer free and really
18:35
supported of them well in my case i’ll
18:39
be working for them to forbid year so I
18:41
mean learning how to announce different
18:44
kind of freudian so indication to assign
18:48
gogo campaign or so
18:50
or entities are this is like the way I’m
18:54
doing a shaft website run another
18:56
indiegogo campaign last November for ten
18:59
thousand dollars which he was like half
19:01
of the bottom usually combining like
19:03
using camera for somebody in 34
19:06
somewhere their son a musician and its
19:09
portfolio he was abusive inside that so
19:11
combining resources mostly the
19:14
production this is what I’ve been doing
19:15
mostly also okay thank you sir
19:41
Oh
