0:00

all right hello everyone hello again

0:03

there’s a few more coming in welcome so

0:11

we’re gonna get started shortly

0:17

my name is Tyler I think I know most of

0:20

most of everyone here and while we’re

0:26

sort of waiting for folks to show up and

0:29

get comfortable I have a lift and a bit

0:31

of a chart with some of the materials

0:33

that you might need for today if you

0:37

want to join us if you want to just

0:39

watch that’s totally fine and yep so

0:45

what I have today are scissors and glue

0:51

or you can use a hot glue gun whichever

0:54

you prefer I’ll go through the materials

0:57

in in a few more and a little more and a

1:03

little more detail but this is the big

1:06

the big one if you don’t have this stuff

1:09

I mean a little board here so you got

1:13

glue and then a panel if you’re going to

1:15

work flat which you can use on cardboard

1:18

and then what I refer to as a repeated

1:22

material so that could be cardboard

1:24

which I’ve cut into triangles or this is

1:27

from toilet paper to some marbles and

1:32

drinking straws this is just strips of

1:35

paper that I rolled up you don’t

1:36

actually have to do anything to it yet

1:40

you just need to gather those things if

1:43

you haven’t already so I’ll give

1:45

everyone a couple of minutes to go ahead

1:48

and gather some things and and then

1:55

we’ll get started shortly

2:00

so I’ll just keep holding this up here I

2:03

guess I have something that prop it up

2:06

against I’ll just hold it so welcome to

2:13

the folks who just joined us if you’re

2:16

just watching great super if you’re

2:18

going to join if you don’t have your

2:20

materials just yeah I’ll give you a

2:23

couple of minutes to get set up these

2:26

are a few examples of some of the

2:28

materials because they are that you can

2:32

that you can use that will work well for

2:34

this project I know I don’t have very

2:36

great handwriting so I actually glued

2:39

some of the right to the the paper here

2:44

so that you can see it

3:05

you

3:18

all right so I’m going to maybe get

3:22

started with the the explaining the

3:27

project benefit if you were with us last

3:30

week welcome back and this is your first

3:33

week with us we welcome for the first

3:35

week my name is Tyler and this is AG H

3:40

at home workshop Wednesday so today

3:44

we’re going to be creating some

3:46

sculptures it can be called modular

3:49

sculptures and I have a few examples

3:53

before I get into that stuff just to let

3:58

you know we are recording this session

4:01

it’ll just be me that you see so that

4:05

way we can post it up on our website if

4:08

I talk to you fast or if you miss

4:09

something it’ll be up there and our

4:12

session from last week is up on the

4:14

website as well if you look at aging H

4:18

home so if you happen to miss something

4:21

in the live stream then you can just

4:23

watch it again in recorded version so

4:27

some of the examples that I have today

4:30

this one that you might have seen in the

4:32

picture is made can anyone guess what

4:38

this is made out of little quiz and tell

4:43

me in the chat

4:45

you

4:48

you

4:50

I will tell you what it is it is made

4:56

out of hula hoops bubble tea straws yeah

5:03

it kind of looks like that but their

5:06

hula hoops that were the hula hoops were

5:10

actually broken so I owe you an fail

5:13

it’s okay it was a they really look like

5:15

bubble tea straws but instead of

5:20

throwing them out I chucked them up and

5:21

I glued them together and another one I

5:25

have here is this one here I made bits

5:31

cardboard that you saw maybe on the

5:35

board here those triangles and another

5:41

one I have here is these sort of rolls

5:45

of paper that I am glued to this panel

5:49

so you can see I’ve done some sort of

5:51

flat that’s really lighting up because

5:54

it’s whole white paper they’re they’re

5:59

kind of flat they’re done on a panel and

6:06

these ones I’ve done so that they are

6:11

free freestanding okay so I’m just going

6:18

to make sure

6:19

[Music]

6:25

oh there we go figured how to turn that

6:27

off great okay so I’m going to move the

6:34

camera down here a little actually

6:36

before I do that the nice thing about

6:38

these ones is you can put that like on

6:43

on your wall or something like that and

6:47

you could pop it in a frame if you want

6:48

to and you get kind of a neat

6:50

I need picture all right so some of the

6:56

again some of the materials that I have

6:59

I’ll go over them really quickly the

7:02

white glue the scissors glue gun if you

7:07

want to use it and what I refer to as

7:15

the repeatable material so a few

7:19

examples of that I have are the

7:23

cardboard bits here so I have these

7:26

cardboard triangles that this itself can

7:30

be a repeating unit or you can glue them

7:33

together I made it into this kind of

7:35

like diamond thing so that’s one to make

7:40

the Rings

7:42

I took a paper tube and I chopped it up

7:45

like this so now I’ve got basically what

7:48

you want for this project is a lot of

7:51

the same thing and I like to keep it the

7:55

same as a bit of a challenge right like

7:57

I’m not going to use I mean you can if

7:59

you want but I’m not going to use for

8:00

this one you know three of these and

8:02

four of those and you know luckily we

8:06

kind of did that a little bit last week

8:07

but this week the challenge I want to

8:10

sort of limit our material drawers here

8:16

what I’ve done with those is I glued

8:19

them together at an angle like that so

8:22

I’ve got a whole bunch

8:30

I’ll sing a marbles and I glued two

8:35

together so something what you want to

8:38

start with something that is really easy

8:40

to make a whole bunch of really quickly

8:43

so I’m gonna work on the the paper rolls

8:48

I’m gonna start with that one first and

8:50

then maybe all going because that one’s

8:55

kind of easiest in terms of and simplest

9:00

in terms of what materials you do or do

9:02

not need so panel here and ready to work

9:09

on and I’m gonna start by making all my

9:11

units or oh my all my modules so to

9:16

begin I’ve got some paper that I’ve cut

9:20

up into strips

9:21

I’m just reusing like these are from you

9:26

like a pad of bristol board I’ve just

9:29

sort of chopped them up these are old

9:32

like to-do lists

9:34

and I’ve chosen some colors that kind of

9:37

fit together a little bit if you want

9:49

your rolls to be nice and tight and thin

9:55

I’m gonna sort of roll it around a

9:58

pencil like this that way and I’m gonna

10:07

slide it off that way I have like a nice

10:11

sort of thin kind of tube now if I glued

10:16

this it would take a while for it to

10:18

like dry so I’m going to use a piece of

10:21

tape here and I know that looks kind of

10:26

tacky but I’ll show you how to hide that

10:28

in a little bit they don’t have to be

10:30

this then they can also be a little bit

10:33

looser if you want so I’m gonna roll

10:35

this one a little bit looser so I get to

10:41

the end there and I’m going to

10:42

a piece of tape right on just like that

10:49

also while we’re working on this if you

10:52

if anyone has any questions I know I

10:54

can’t hear you but I can see the the

10:57

chat on the side there so if you have

10:59

any questions while we’re working on

11:01

this please feel free to to to ask and I

11:06

will

11:07

you know I’ll try and bring that if I’m

11:11

gonna do actually I’m gonna cut this one

11:13

shorter roll that up a little piece of

11:22

tape on it so you can see now I have

11:25

three I’m able to make some of these

11:28

pretty pretty quickly

11:31

a nice little trick or hack is you can

11:35

take a bigger sheet and roll it up nice

11:39

and big piece of tape on the side I

11:49

think normally I would use clear tape

11:53

for this but I don’t I don’t and if you

12:06

want you can make your units

12:08

you know nice and long like that or if

12:12

you want them to be shorter once you’ve

12:14

made the the two now what I can do is I

12:17

can start cutting to me and just like

12:22

that I started with one and now I have

12:29

so that’s another that’s a way that you

12:31

can kind of speed up the process a

12:34

little bit all right this one I’m going

12:37

to maybe cut that one in half

13:01

yeah okay so now I’ve started to you

13:05

know I’ve got a bit of a collection of

13:08

of units or modules and now you can kind

13:11

of decide how you’re going to assemble

13:13

them together so step one is to gather

13:17

the material step two is to either

13:20

change it or like to create a module by

13:26

either changing that material or adding

13:28

something to it like on on the straws I

13:31

added them together like this and on the

13:36

paper I rolled them up and the the paper

13:42

tubes I cut them up so there’s a couple

13:45

different ways that you can sort of

13:48

modify or create your your your module

13:53

so for this one I’m gonna start on the

13:56

panel I’m gonna use white glue for this

14:00

one now if you’re using something that’s

14:04

like starting with like kind of like

14:05

really big ones your first one might be

14:13

a bit tricky to get it to sort of stand

14:16

up so I’m going to use something that’s

14:18

actually one of my bigger or wider ones

14:21

I’m going to use this one and I’m going

14:25

to put a little bit of glue and a bit of

14:31

a ring and I’m gonna put this right in

14:35

there and if your ring isn’t the perfect

14:38

size you can kind of like shift it

14:40

around like that and then you got make

14:45

sure that the glue thing I’ve got a bit

14:50

of jam in my glue bottle I’m going to

14:56

clean

14:58

using a toothpick

15:08

alright so now I’m going to use another

15:10

one and I’m gonna put it directly beside

15:13

here I’m gonna put a little more glue on

15:17

there and I’m also going to put a little

15:19

bit of glue up the side I’m going to

15:23

stick it in the glue and then push them

15:24

kind of together and eventually once you

15:29

have a number of them in there they’re

15:35

gonna start they’re gonna really be able

15:37

to support themselves which was

15:41

especially in this one especially when I

15:45

started with the really really tiny ones

15:47

in the middle there they would just keep

15:50

falling over so I did a couple all at

15:52

once and then eventually the glue

15:56

started to dry and then I would just

15:57

keep pushing them and so that they would

16:00

connect with the one beside it alright

16:05

so I’m going to put a little bit of glue

16:07

on there on this one my next one

16:10

and each time I put them together I put

16:12

the side that I have the tape on the

16:15

inside so that way now I’ve got three on

16:19

there and if I rotate it around okay I

16:22

can see some tape still peeking out

16:24

there so maybe that’s where I’m going to

16:26

put my next piece I’m going to put my

16:28

next one there a little bit of glue on

16:31

like that and just sort of nudge it in

16:36

there gently okay I’m gonna keep going

16:42

maybe I’m going to use the new color

16:51

kind of canary yellow

16:54

[Music]

17:05

now you can see it’s looking a bit like

17:09

kind of a bit of a mess with all this

17:12

glue down here if you missed a spot

17:15

you just put a little bit in you can use

17:17

something to kind of like just scrape

17:19

that up clean that just be careful not

17:27

to you know push your your little tubes

17:30

too much or you can just like this was

17:37

in the same situation before and you

17:40

can’t see it because the glue it just

17:41

dries it dries clear so you can just

17:45

kind of wait wait that one out and let’s

17:50

see I’m gonna put this tall one here now

17:53

when I put a big tall one in I’m gonna

17:56

maybe put it closer to these ones

17:59

because it’s going to be close closer in

18:01

size if I put it here then it’s going to

18:03

be kind of a big jump which is fine but

18:06

those are things that I kind of want to

18:08

think about as I’m making it so I’m

18:10

going to put this one over here so it’s

18:12

closer in size actually maybe I’ll even

18:14

cut out a little bit shorter so it’s

18:18

still a bit taller but not too much

18:23

taller okay so I’m going to keep going

18:37

on that and kind of like fill fill some

18:43

of these up you don’t have to go over

18:45

the to the to the to the edges like this

18:47

one I keep showing you this one but

18:49

there’s a bit of oil

18:51

you know it’s design in here okay so

19:03

that’s the one that you’re working on

19:05

the panel the next one that we’re gonna

19:07

I’m going to show you is the one it’s a

19:10

little more

19:11

it might be a little more finicky but

19:13

we’re we’re gonna be building something

19:16

that’s a little more freestanding I’m

19:18

gonna move that camera up a little bit

19:21

so I’m going to go back to my example

19:23

here of my sort of freestanding

19:28

sculpture it stands this way like that I

19:33

could put it like this I just put it any

19:36

which way um I’m gonna do that one with

19:45

these and to cut these because it’s

19:52

round

19:52

I usually flatten best first and then

20:09

unflattering them afterwards just like

20:13

that okay so now this one is a little

20:21

more well there I mean you can do any of

20:25

them any way you like but this one is a

20:27

little more free freeform and you can

20:31

kind of decide the next thing you need

20:35

to is decide how you’re going to put

20:37

them together because these are gonna

20:40

I’m going to be building them up I’m

20:41

going to use a hot glue gun for this one

20:43

so that it dries a bit quicker so I

20:47

could for example I could start kind of

20:50

stacking them like this I could maybe

20:55

start putting them together you know

20:58

stacking them like this

21:01

I think I’ll maybe I’ll start with that

21:04

because

21:06

I want to UM glue here so I’m going to

21:13

begin by gluing a little bit of glue on

21:18

this one put those together

21:25

you

21:27

it’s a little toasty actually what I’m

21:29

going to do for these is I’m going to do

21:30

that a few more times I’m gonna I’m

21:33

gonna keep gluing together these two in

21:37

into little little number eights like

21:41

that

21:44

[Music]

21:47

that way they’re already you know

21:52

partially together and ready to go and

21:56

as I’m sort of putting these together

22:01

I’m preparing my materials but also the

22:05

very first one is pretty much dry now so

22:07

I like to kind of go back and forth

22:10

between you know before when I was

22:13

rolling the paper I’ll roll a few things

22:15

of paper then I’ll like glue a few to

22:17

that it’ll go back kind of keep going

22:19

back and forth but it’s up to you you

22:22

know if you like making all of your

22:25

little modules beforehand you can also

22:32

you like like I said before you can use

22:34

basically whatever you want that you can

22:37

find lots of for example I started I

22:42

started this one with toothpicks my

22:46

module was very very small all I did was

22:49

take a toothpick like this sort of break

22:53

it or bend it but it I didn’t break it

22:58

totally apart and this is this was fun

23:01

but if you can see like my yeah it is

23:07

pretty cool but my fingers are pretty

23:09

fat so it was really hard to kind of

23:11

like you know it got it pretty good it

23:15

got pretty finicky after a little while

23:18

so that actually took me quite a while

23:21

to do because I kept burning myself with

23:24

glue gun so you know you can do

23:27

something with bigger pieces or smaller

23:29

pieces it’s totally up to you

23:33

there I guess all right so these are now

23:36

starting to get they’re starting to be

23:39

starting to dry out so I’m going to

23:40

start assembling them together

23:54

do it

23:56

yeah I’m going to glue them together

23:58

there

24:02

oh well it’s going to hold because

24:08

there’s not a very big spot that they’re

24:09

staying together we’ll try let’s see

24:16

what happens

24:22

that’s pretty important I think when

24:24

you’re you’re making artwork is too

24:29

you know explore and experiment a lot

24:32

try out different materials you know

24:36

I’ve got four things on the go right now

24:41

which is not that uncommon but for me

24:44

but you know trying lots of things and

24:49

if you know four of them don’t work but

24:52

one of them does and you’re super happy

24:54

about it then that’s pretty great I

24:55

think there few other spots put a little

25:04

bit of glue in there I keep sort of

25:21

building my tower a little piece and

25:27

each time I’m putting these on I’m kind

25:30

of twisting twisting them just a little

25:34

bit

25:46

okay so if you look at it inside getting

25:53

out ooh

25:59

all right so that’s sort of the the

26:03

beginning of that process we are almost

26:09

out of time or I’m almost out of time

26:12

unfortunately so what I’m going to do is

26:15

I’m going to keep working on on some of

26:17

these and I’ll give them to Connor and

26:22

Christy and they’ll throw them up on the

26:24

website the finished product

26:27

maybe I’ll paint them so what I did this

26:30

is what we made last week with our

26:38

assemblage sculpture with lots of

26:40

different bits and pieces and then I

26:42

painted it I probably won’t paint this

26:45

one because I really like the black and

26:47

the white that little yellow in there

26:49

almost kind of looks like but that

26:53

reminds me of like a fried egg or

26:55

something anyway so yeah I’ll show you

27:00

guys that you know these when they’re

27:05

finished if if if they turn out alright

27:08

and and as always if you make something

27:14

and you’d love to share it with us we

27:16

would love we would absolutely love to

27:21

see what you’ve made if you’ve made some

27:23

things please feel free to take a photo

27:27

of it and send and post it on Facebook

27:30

or Instagram and if you use our hashtag

27:34

agh at home we will yes Thank You

27:40

Christy we will we’ll share it and we’ll

27:45

you know then we’ll we’ll be able to see

27:47

it and and everyone else will be able to

27:49

see it yeah

27:52

there’s our info Thank You Christy yeah

27:58

I did I this is actually the first I

28:01

hadn’t noticed that at all until I was

28:05

looking at it in the screen so that’s

28:07

kind of neat so yeah again

28:13

you very much for for joining us here

28:17

workshop Wednesday’s next week we are

28:20

going to be doing collage project so if

28:26

you want to get a head start you can

28:28

start gathering up different materials

28:32

and paper for that so I’m going to be

28:36

going through some abstract collage

28:38

things I’ve already started to grab some

28:42

things so some ideas there’s the classic

28:44

like magazines you know you can also

28:48

find like great textures and like this

28:51

is the hope you can see it very well

28:53

because of the light like old paper

28:55

towels and I’ve been wiping my

28:56

paintbrushes on for like the last week

28:59

I’m going to save that and use that

29:01

maybe next week you know maybe some

29:03

bubble wrap these are like some old

29:07

swatches from you know paintings I I did

29:11

in a sketch book like ages ago they’re

29:15

just kind of like sitting around I’m

29:16

going to use those and then of course

29:19

like you know this this sort of stuff

29:22

works really really well for that as

29:24

well so I’ll have a materials list up or

29:29

that in case you didn’t catch all that

29:35

but yes thank you very much again for

29:39

joining feels like we just started like

29:44

five minutes ago

29:44

but now we’re at the end but wonderful

29:51

okay

29:52

I will see you guys hopefully next week

29:56

alright
