no one has my DNA so why the hell am i

0:02

comparing myself to anybody else right

0:04

I’m me and I can be the best me no one

0:07

else can be me and what I bring is my

0:11

beauty and my uniqueness and no one can

0:14

take that away from you so focus on that

0:16

focus on what makes you you I grew up on

0:25

Bollywood and I grew up singing and

0:27

dancing and where can I put the two

0:28

together it was in Bombay for me so I

0:32

entered a pageant I won the pageant won

0:35

the world pageant and then I went to

0:36

Bombay I was really lucky to have worked

0:39

with a slew of incredible people in

0:43

Bombay I’ve done over I don’t know like

0:44

50 ads with some top stars and then

0:49

films short films theater and then I

0:52

fell into daily television on Indian TV

0:56

so I was a soap opera actress for about

1:00

two years in India people know me

1:02

because of Satnam vana Satya Sathya for

1:06

a short was what the TV show the daily

1:09

soap opera was called and that was on in

1:11

one of India’s like largest channels

1:13

Star Plus so primetime TV soap opera it

1:16

was crazy actually you know cuz I played

1:18

like a negative character and I played

1:20

like the the mean the mean boohoo

1:23

daughter-in-law the mean

1:24

daughter-in-law from abroad and it got

1:27

people get so into soap operas over

1:29

there that they really think that it’s

1:30

real so one time me and my co actress we

1:33

were just walking down the bandstand

1:36

which is like like their boardwalk and

1:38

we had these auntie’s come up to us and

1:41

we’re like okay we are one side in Hindi

1:44

they were like oh my god you guys you’re

1:46

so bad you’re doing all these bad things

1:48

how dare you do that and why are you

1:50

poisoning or and leave her alone she’s

1:51

such a good girl you guys are bad bad

1:53

bad we’re like oh my god you’re about to

1:56

hit us and we gotta be careful but you

1:59

know the way I took it at that one I’m

2:01

like at least people are resonating with

2:03

my character enough so maybe I’m doing a

2:05

decent job that they actually think I’m

2:07

evil so

2:09

that was always fun we broadcast 365

2:16

days a year like the show that I was on

2:17

was the number one show on one of the

2:19

number-one channels 365 days so I was

2:23

shooting like 23 24 27 days sometimes

2:26

and the turnaround time is ridiculous

2:28

like you shoot some sometimes like if

2:30

there was like a like an emergency they

2:32

had to shoot something send it off and

2:34

it would be in the night’s telecast like

2:36

it would be like that crazy then they

2:38

would like do a 7:00 a.m. shift just so

2:40

that they could get that sent off for

2:41

broadcast so it’s crazy like typically

2:44

what we shoot will broadcast two days

2:46

later typically so that’s it and you’re

2:49

shooting all the time

2:49

it’s crazy it was an experience that has

2:53

made me a better person for sure it was

2:56

nothing like I had ever imagined I

2:58

thought I was Indian but really when you

3:01

go there you realize I’m Canadian

3:03

I don’t know how this world operates at

3:05

all so it was a lot of cultural

3:08

adaptation for me and cultural learning

3:10

of course there was a language because

3:12

they I mean India is the largest

3:13

english-speaking country in the world

3:15

like it has a most number of English

3:16

speakers but still they speak Hindi

3:18

quite a bit as well and so and if you

3:20

want to be on television or in film you

3:23

need to speak the language that they

3:25

presented so I had to get a diction

3:28

coach and you know learn the language

3:29

and that was very different and it’s

3:31

just a different way that they operate

3:33

over there there they it’s crazy but

3:36

they understand they’re crazy right so

3:38

we can’t from our world in here in

3:40

Canada or first of all we can’t really

3:42

necessarily project what our

3:44

expectations on them and I think but

3:45

that’s the biggest folly people make

3:47

when they expect them to work quite like

3:49

the way we work over here like on time

3:51

with the schedule you know and good lead

3:55

times and stuff over there it doesn’t

3:56

work like that but you just have to

3:58

learn to adjust to their craziness don’t

4:00

expect schedules I would find out call

4:04

times would be like something that you’d

4:06

find out maybe like the day before

4:08

whatever but I think that’s sort of

4:10

normal but even over here when I’ve been

4:12

doing films call times come the night

4:14

before but I think what you really have

4:16

to get used to is just there’s so many

4:18

different people on set all the time and

4:22

what their functions are you also have

4:24

to get used to the way people operate

4:26

like it’s just a different culture and

4:30

for example over here everyone is on

4:34

sort of the same level your hair and

4:36

makeup your spot boys your everybody

4:38

right and we treat everyone the same and

4:40

that’s how I went in and I I treated

4:44

everybody and then I realized and I

4:47

don’t know if I should say this but it

4:48

is something that you you do realize I

4:50

realized that I couldn’t treat they they

4:54

respond over there to hierarchy and if I

4:57

was too nice to people they would never

5:00

come and do my touch-up and they just

5:01

like sit over there and be on their

5:04

phone or whatever and I’m like well it’s

5:05

my clothes like I need a touch-up right

5:07

but it wasn’t until like I had to sort

5:09

of exert authority on them and and you

5:12

know get a little mad which was so not

5:14

who I am

5:16

that that’s when they actually were like

5:18

okay cool we’ll be there for you and

5:20

we’ll do yourself so that was like a

5:22

crazy learning for me also you have to

5:25

do the work yourself go out to a number

5:28

of auditions and eventually you’ll

5:31

figure out which of the auditions that

5:33

are legitimate and which aren’t but

5:35

you’ll get in front of people and I

5:36

think that’s the most that you can do

5:37

just keep going to as many auditions and

5:40

stuff as possible and eventually you

5:42

should like find your way because

5:45

there’s no one to show you the way over

5:47

there you just have to figure it out

5:48

yourself sometimes people get too

5:50

focused on the art and just creating and

5:54

you have to balance creation with actual

5:58

business and I’ve seen a lot of artists

6:01

just fall down and just like you know

6:03

just rubbing their guitar all day long

6:05

and they’re just creating this amazing

6:06

music but they don’t know how to go out

6:08

and get out there and sell themselves

6:11

because at the end of the day you have

6:12

to eat right so you have to figure out

6:14

what you need to do and if you don’t

6:16

have another job then you have to focus

6:19

on that business part of it and that’s

6:21

why I think you know programs like these

6:22

are also very helpful for artists to get

6:26

into that and to get out there but you

6:27

really have to attack your art like a

6:29

job so whether it’s making lists of if

6:32

you’re a singer and you need to you know

6:34

get out and sing it

6:35

for an events like make a list of event

6:37

companies and just like tackle them one

6:38

by one by one by one and so have that

6:42

balance between creation and then actual

6:44

business one thing people don’t talk

6:46

about is finance make sure you have some

6:50

good savings that you can live off of

6:52

because when you go there you there’s so

6:55

much competition there are so many

6:57

people everyone and their mother wants

6:59

to be in Bollywood in India so and you

7:02

have people from all over the world from

7:03

Brazil from Russia from Canada UK

7:06

everywhere come to India so you might

7:10

not get work right away and you have to

7:12

be prepared for that so I think

7:13

financially make sure you’re sound next

7:16

it is about the people that you interact

7:20

with it really adds so there’s a lot of

7:22

people that won’t lead you down the

7:26

right path so watch out for that but

7:29

there are lots of people who are doing

7:30

great work it’s a great time actually to

7:32

be in India because a lot of new

7:34

interesting projects are coming out of

7:37

there right now I have an agent so ok

7:40

she takes care of my acting stuff right

7:43

but as an artist when you’re doing

7:45

things like spoken word and whatever I

7:46

think marketing and getting yourself

7:49

into the limelight is where a lot of

7:52

artists I think need help perhaps and

7:54

maybe it’s like Korea how do I create a

7:56

YouTube channel and how do I you know

7:58

film my videos what do I need like these

8:00

sorts of things so to set your to set up

8:02

the business part of it I think that’s

8:04

where artists would need help hey guys

8:07
