is
0:11
my name is vermise Karim I am the

founder and head choreographer of veils

based in Montreal Canada

How did you get into dance
0:36
so I’m Indian by Heritage my family has
0:40
been living in Kenya for a few
0:41
Generations which is where I was born
0:43
and we moved out of Kenya when I was too
0:45
unsettled in Canada so I was raised as a
0:48
Canadian my parents had actually
0:50
enrolled me in different extracurricular
0:52
activities after school and classes and
0:54
they found that in all the activities
0:55
that I was signed up in I wasn’t
0:57
enjoying them I wasn’t excelling in
0:59
anything I wasn’t having fun and so
1:02
dance was an opportunity they thought
1:04
might interest me and they took me to go
1:06
see a show that was produced by a local
1:08
dance studio and when I went and saw the
1:11
show my job was open at the end and they
1:14
asked if I wanted to join classes I said
1:16
yes and that was a start
1:19
through showing my art my objective is
What is your objective
1:22
to really encourage future generations
1:23
of artists to pursue their art on a
1:26
professional level as a career choice
1:28
and not as a glorified hobby or a
1:30
Pastime I think it’s important
1:32
especially in our community to show that
1:35
the Arts are a viable career and given
1:38
how art was consumed throughout the
1:40
pandemic I think that everybody has
1:42
learned that art plays a crucial and a
1:44
very vital role in society

2:09
thank you
2:15
foreign
2:16
there’s not very many male dancers I
What are your goals
2:19
also identify as part of the queer
2:21
community
2:22
identify as a person of color so those
2:24
provide barriers sometimes with casting
2:27
in regards to diversity and inclusion
2:29
and so a core focus of my work through
2:31
my Collective is to use Bollywood and
2:34
dance to spread joy to share another
2:37
culture and to live an experience with
2:40
other bodies and movement and motion I
2:43
think there’s many perceptions and
2:45
preconceived notions about what
2:47
Bollywood is
2:48
um what it’s based on and these
2:51
perceptions of course
2:53
engages in a in a deeper role in
2:55
education and in pedagogy and in
2:58
transmitting information that is
3:02
breaking stereotypes and showcasing the
3:06
Beauty and the Mosaic of cultures that
3:08
is actually making up Bollywood culture
3:10
I’m most looking forward to performing
3:12
at the festival and presenting the two
3:15
numbers that are being created which are
3:17
inspired by the world of Dreams what
3:19
interests me about the world of Dreams
3:21
is that it’s it’s something that’s
3:23
accessible to to many folks because many
3:26
of us do dream uh the the qualities of
3:29
the dreams themselves the sort of
3:32
non-sensical illogical possibility that
3:35
can that can happen in a dream this
3:37
transportation of of ourselves into a
3:40
parallel world or into another dimension
3:42
and how this is a very ephemeral
3:45
experience those are all qualities and
3:48
things about dreams that interest me
3:49
which I’m looking to bring to the
3:51
performance through Bollywood dance

Conclusion
4:22
I think this Festival is is an
4:25
indication of the cultural diversity
4:27
that is present in Canada I think it’s
4:30
important to highlight different
4:31
communities that have established
4:33
themselves in Canada without forgetting
4:35
the role that we also play on this land
4:37
as settlers I think that the festival
4:40
also provides a platform for aspiring
4:42
artists for emerging artists for
4:44
established artists to really come
4:46
together and create a sense of community
4:48
a sense of belonging build Bridges with
4:51
with other like-minded folks and to come
4:55
together with this common goal of
4:57
upliftment through ART
4:59
of Bollywood we hope to see you back
5:03
next year
5:06
what a beautiful performance
