hello everyone i’m ryan ferguson i’m the
0:03
curator film at the art gallery of
0:05
hamilton
0:05
uh i hope everyone out there is enjoying
0:08
the the sudden appearance of seasonal
0:10
weather here
0:11
in hamilton and across the province it’s
0:12
about time i know there’s a beautiful
0:14
day happening outside of my window and
0:16
i’m really looking forward to enjoying
0:17
some of it soon myself
0:19
um today i wanted to take some time to
0:21
plug the latest addition to
0:23
our monthly online film series at the
0:25
art gallery of hamilton
0:26
the film is called about endlessness and
0:28
it’s directed by
0:30
the swedish film director roy anderson
0:33
roy anderson is probably best known
0:35
globally for his work in commercials um
0:38
but he did get his start in the swedish
0:41
film industry in the late 60s early 70s
0:44
he made a film in 1970 called swedish
0:47
love story which is commonly seen as one
0:49
of the defining swedish films of that
0:50
era
0:52
he gave feature film making up shortly
0:55
after though because he
0:56
felt that he wasn’t really able to make
0:57
the types of films that he wanted to
1:00
within the confines of the swedish film
1:02
industry at that time
1:03
so at that point he switched gears and
1:05
embarked on
1:06
a very very successful career making
1:09
commercials
1:10
he won numerous wards around the world
1:11
created over 400 commercials
1:13
uh some of the best known film
1:15
commercials uh across europe through
1:17
that era
1:18
and established through that process his
1:20
own studio
1:22
um and again through all of the success
1:25
in the commercial
1:26
world he was able to sort of buy himself
1:29
the freedom to start making the films
1:31
again that he wanted
1:32
so the first of those was called songs
1:34
from for the second floor
1:36
um and he’s made a few of those uh you
1:38
the living the most recent
1:40
one we screened at our film festival i
1:42
believe it was in 2015
1:43
uh that film was called a pigeon sat on
1:45
a branch reflecting on life
1:48
is a very very interesting specific
1:51
style of filmmaking
1:53
that was developed through his
1:54
commercial practice and
1:57
uh it’s just such a wonderful unique
1:59
world view that
2:01
is projected through his his lens
2:05
um i’m really hoping that some of you
2:07
take some time out to check that film
2:08
out this month
2:10
um it’s like i said available in our
2:12
online film series
2:14
um and if if you do and check out any of
2:16
the films in our online film series i’d
2:18
encourage you to join
2:19
our monthly film club this month we’re
2:22
meeting on may 26th
2:23
we get together that one evening a month
2:26
on zoom
2:27
and talk about uh the films that were in
2:30
our monthly film
2:31
series and do a little sneak peek of
2:33
what’s coming
2:34
up in the next month uh it’s a really
2:36
nice opportunity to
2:38
discuss the films that you might have
2:39
seen over the month uh
2:41
and i always really enjoy talking in
2:43
greater detail about
2:45
the films that we present each and every
2:46
month as part of the online film series
2:49
at the art gallery of hamilton
2:51
and before we go today i wanted to
2:53
actually take a time a little bit of
2:55
time to talk a little bit more about
2:56
what
2:57
the online film series is and why it
2:59
exists and why it’s actually an
3:01
important
3:02
um piece of the the film industry as we
3:06
work through this pandemic uh the films
3:08
that are in our featured in our monthly
3:10
film series tend to be the films that
3:12
in a non-pandemic world would be in the
3:14
theater right now
3:16
and a theatrical release is a very very
3:18
critical point of a film’s
3:20
development um it’s one of the places
3:23
where the filmmakers the
3:25
distributors the the people who paid to
3:28
make the film happen
3:29
um get some of their money back
3:33
um and also feature it on a in a
3:36
standalone type of platform so the
3:38
theatrical release we’re trying to
3:39
simulate that with an online film series
3:42
and every ticket that gets purchased to
3:43
our online film series 50
3:45
of that ticket goes right back to the
3:47
film so it helps
3:48
continue the um a healthy film industry
3:52
as we work through this pandemic
3:54
and hopefully end up getting to see
3:55
movies in the theater again
3:57
real soon the way they’re meant to be
4:00
seen
4:01
so it still does provide a really
4:03
important step in this process and
4:05
that’s why
4:06
we’re so happy to be doing it and we’re
4:07
so committed to be doing this program
4:10
each and every month because we really
4:11
do want to support the film industry
4:14
and the filmmakers out there who are
4:15
still working through the pandemic
4:17
um and just a reminder the last the
4:19
other two films that are available
4:21
in our online film series this month are
4:23
berlin alexanderplatz
4:25
uh and museum town and museum town is a
4:28
documentary about the contemporary arts
4:30
museum
4:31
mass moca so as the art gallery of
4:33
hamilton i’m sure there’s a lot of you
4:34
out there
4:35
who are would be very interested in
4:37
seeing that film
4:38
uh and then quickly i’ll give you all a
4:40
sneak peek
4:42
for june a film that just premiered last
4:45
week at the hot dogs festival
4:47
in toronto is a documentary called
4:49
street gang and it’s a behind the scenes
4:52
look
4:52
at the history and the development of
4:55
the sesame street tv show i was really
4:58
fortunate to get to see it during the
4:59
festival last week and i’m so excited to
5:01
be sharing it next month
5:02
and i can’t wait for everyone across
5:05
hamilton and the province
5:07
to get a chance to see this film and
5:08
then join us in our film club in june to
5:10
talk about it
5:12
okay so i’m gonna leave you with that i
5:14
hope you’re enjoying the weather
5:16
keep watching movies i’m gonna go
5:17
outside and enjoy this day see at the
5:19
movies
