hi i’m ryan ferguson the curator of film

0:02

at the art gallery of hamilton

0:04

wednesday april 21st is national

0:06

canadian film day

0:07

and we’re really excited to be

0:08

presenting two canadian made films this

0:10

month

0:11

in our online film series at the art

0:12

gallery hamilton the first

0:14

shiva baby is the debut feature from

0:17

writer director emma seligman

0:19

who’s from toronto it’s a hilarious

0:21

stressful

0:22

comedy about a really bad day in the

0:25

life of a young woman

0:27

it’s already been one of our most

0:29

popular films in our online film series

0:31

so i know a lot of you already watched

0:33

it

0:33

um big news for that film it’s currently

0:35

being developed into an hbo

0:37

series so uh at some time in the near

0:40

future you’re gonna have a lot more

0:41

shiva baby in your life

0:42

if you haven’t seen it i highly

0:44

recommend going to check it out before

0:45

the month ends

0:46

the other film that we’re showing this

0:48

month no ordinary man

0:50

is from uh directors ashlyn chin yi

0:53

who’s from montreal

0:54

and chase joint it’s a really

0:56

interesting um

0:58

unconventional take on the documentary

1:00

format uh

1:01

and it tells the life story of trans

1:03

jazz musician

1:04

billy tipton um i i really can’t

1:08

recommend this film any

1:09

any higher it was one of the big hits to

1:11

come out of tiff

1:12

2020 and it’s it’s a really interesting

1:15

look not only at the life of billy

1:17

tipton

1:18

but of of the way the media

1:20

sensationalized

1:22

uh his life after his passing and how

1:25

the media has

1:26

evolved and and treats trans stories

1:29

over time

1:30

uh like i said it’s available in the

1:32

online film series

1:33

at artgalleryofhamilton.com until uh the

1:36

end of april so

1:37

please please please check this film out

1:39

it’s really really great

1:42

um a lot of people always ask me i think

1:43

it’s the most asked question i get is

1:44

what are you what are you watching what

1:46

are you watching

1:47

and uh so i thought i’d take a second to

1:49

talk about that as well

1:51

the truth of the matter is most of my

1:53

time is spent watching

1:54

the films that end up in our film series

1:56

end up in our film festival

1:58

or don’t end up in our film series or

2:01

film festival

2:02

but every month i do like to go through

2:05

my personal dvd

2:07

and blu-ray collection sometimes even my

2:10

vhs tapes

2:11

and pick a few movies around a theme so

2:14

with

2:15

this april being national canadian film

2:17

month

2:18

i grabbed a few canadian films out this

2:20

month so

2:21

i thought i would share that with you

2:23

here um when i think of canadian film

2:25

the first filmmaker i think of always is

2:27

guy madden uh this film the forbidden

2:30

room we screened at our film festival

2:31

back in 2015

2:33

and it’s it’s just such a strange

2:35

beautiful

2:36

interesting ode to to silent film i’ve

2:39

watched it several times over the years

2:41

i think i watch

2:42

probably guymod is a very prolific

2:44

filmmaker i probably watch

2:46

on average two of his films a month in

2:49

uh just in my

2:50

free time because i love his work so

2:51

much but this one is just it’s just so

2:53

beautiful and

2:54

and fascinating it’s an ode to the

2:56

silent films that have been lost

2:58

so they tried to recreate um

3:01

silent films that are no longer

3:05

in existence that were lost over 90

3:07

percent of silent films have been lost

3:09

and it’s again

3:10

i just think it’s a really fascinating

3:11

film another one

3:13

here is uh from the first year that i

3:15

programmed the film festival

3:17

uh 2013 that was

3:20

2014 sorry uh two door nicole this one

3:23

is great i really loved

3:24

this um and seeing it on the big screen

3:26

the beautiful black and white

3:27

cinematography was fantastic

3:30

maybe some month i’ll show you my

3:32

viewing set up at home but for now

3:34

uh i love this film i’m looking for it i

3:36

haven’t watched it yet but i’m really

3:37

looking forward to re-watching it

3:39

uh on my uh on my screen here at home

3:41

because it’s such a quirky

3:43

interesting french canadian comedy small

3:45

film but really

3:46

really fun to watch and then the last

3:48

one i i pulled out isn’t

3:50

exactly a canadian film but the producer

3:53

of the film tim johnson is from six

3:55

nations and was very instrumental in the

3:58

research

3:59

and the uh original exhibition that

4:02

started the process of this film being

4:03

made

4:04

rumble the indians who rocked the world

4:07

i honestly believe this is one of the

4:08

most essential films i’ve seen in the

4:10

last

4:11

10 years it’s you don’t have to be a

4:14

music fan to appreciate

4:15

um the wealth of interesting um

4:19

information and how much uh we didn’t

4:22

know

4:23

about how influential the indigenous

4:25

music of turtle island has been on

4:27

rock pop jazz blues all the music

4:30

that we essentially listened to today i

4:33

can’t recommend this film

4:34

any more highly i think everyone should

4:36

watch this

4:38

and quickly before i go i just wanted to

4:40

make a plug for our monthly film club

4:42

uh you can join the film club online

4:44

through

4:45

our website

4:48

hhrkelerhamilton.comfilmfest.com

4:50

or when you register to watch one of our

4:52

films on the film series

4:53

every month we get together over zoom

4:55

and talk uh with a group of film

4:57

film lovers about the films that we’re

5:00

offering

5:00

in our online film series so if you

5:02

watch shiva baby if you watch

5:04

no ordinary man or if you watch the

5:07

inheritance which is our other film this

5:08

month which is

5:09

an incredible film my favorite film of

5:11

2020.

5:12

um i i i can’t recommend that film

5:16

enough it’s it’s an

5:17

amazing amazing film um but we’re going

5:20

to talk about all three of those films

5:21

in in more detail

5:23

in the coming weeks so register online

5:24

again it’s our gallerypendleton.com or

5:27

ajfilmfest.com
