hello i’m ryan ferguson i’m the curator

0:01

of film at the art gallery of hamilton

0:03

and i wanted to say a special thank you

0:04

to everyone

0:05

who watched our april films i hope you

0:07

enjoyed them all

0:09

and in fact you made shiva baby our best

0:12

attended film so far in the

0:14

just over a year we’ve been running the

0:15

online film series so thanks again

0:17

uh and i hope you’re excited for our

0:19

films that we have coming up in may

0:20

i’m here to talk about a couple of those

0:22

right now the first

0:24

berlin alexander platts is an adaptation

0:27

of a

0:27

famous weimar era novel out of germany

0:31

um originally released in 1929

0:35

it has been adapted a few times over the

0:37

years most notably

0:38

in 1980 rayner werner

0:42

fassbender made a 15 and a half hour tv

0:45

series out of the novel

0:46

um which has been quite widely seen but

0:49

this this

0:50

uh adaptation takes place in current day

0:52

berlin

0:53

as a bit of a contemporary feel to the

0:56

primary story in the novel

0:59

recasts the main protagonist as an

1:02

undocumented

1:03

african refugee who lands in berlin

1:06

after a very very difficult journey

1:08

and vows to be a good man but he soon

1:11

realizes how difficult

1:12

it is to be righteous while living

1:14

undocumented in germany

1:16

the papers without nationality and

1:18

without a work permit

1:19

um the film is beautifully shot there’s

1:21

this nice contemporary neon

1:23

sheen to it berlin looks fabulous

1:26

and the performances are top notch so a

1:29

really

1:30

great film that originally premiered at

1:32

the 2020 berlin film festival so this is

1:34

one of the first times

1:35

uh you’ll be able to see this film in

1:37

cannabis so very exciting

1:39

and the other film that i’m going to

1:40

talk about briefly here today

1:42

is one i’m really excited to be sharing

1:44

it’s a documentary

1:46

it’s called museum town it’s a

1:47

documentary about mass moca

1:50

if you’re not familiar with mass moca it

1:52

is the largest contemporary art museum

1:54

in the world

1:55

um and it took this film takes place

1:58

over the last

1:59

25 years going even a little bit further

2:02

back into the history of

2:03

of the town um back to the genesis of

2:06

the idea of this museum

2:08

how it was being brought in as an

2:11

idea to reinvigorate a town a factory

2:15

that was

2:15

that had been vacated and the town was

2:18

dying around it

2:20

it’s a really amazing story about how

2:22

you know

2:23

art can uh have the power to transform

2:26

uh a city uh and the identity of a city

2:29

and

2:30

obviously uh in hamilton that’s that’s

2:32

quite a relevant story so

2:34

i hope i hope everyone enjoys that and

2:37

if you

2:37

wanted to talk about these films don’t

2:39

forget we have our monthly film club

2:41

takes place the last um wednesday of

2:44

every month

2:44

you can register for that on our website

2:47

and we get together with a bunch of

2:48

filmmakers very casual and just

2:50

discussed this month’s films

2:52

so uh like to see you there and i’ll be

2:55

back in a couple weeks to talk about our

2:56

other film for may

2:58

about endlessness
