SEASON 1: EPISODE 8

Bollywood playback singer Jonita Gandhi stopped by the MAD studios for an unplugged, acoustic performance of one of her latest hits, “Gilehriyaan” from the popular film Dangal. In this episode, she’s joined by YouTuber and media personality Daniel Pillai for an exclusive interview where they discuss her move to India, the challenges of a career in music, and her tips for success.

The song “Gilehriyaan” earned the singer a Mirchi Music Award for “Female Vocalist of the Year.” As Canadian homegrown talent, Jonita Gandhi made her singing debut in 2013 with composer A.R. Rahman of Slumdog Millionaire fame and her Bollywood debut in the title track of the 2013 hit film Chennai Express starring mega stars Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

4:34

how’s that experience been for you to

4:37

kind of go from the South Asian

4:38

community here dream about you know some

4:41

of these Bollywood composers and singers

4:43

and now being in that space how is that

4:46

difference for you is it culturally

4:48

different of course yeah I’ve grown up

4:51

here so moving to India was quite the

4:54

experience I had visited India many

4:58

times like Delhi Bombay only once Mumbai

5:01

only once and it’s that city I mean I

5:04

feel like India in general is so

5:06

different when you visit versus when you

5:08

go there and live there and you live

5:10

there when you’re visiting and you’re

5:11

staying with fans or family you know the

5:13

your experience is gonna be completely

5:15

different right and versus when you’re

5:16

there on your own having to deal with

5:19

the daily you know grind and you know

5:21

getting made to come and getting around

5:24

in auto rickshaws and people

5:26

understanding you and you know dealing

5:28

with people is so different there than

5:30

it is here so it was quite the

5:32

experience but there are many perks to

5:35

living in India like I said we get maids

5:36

there and like everything can be

5:41

delivered there so it’s amazing
