#MonsterArts for Youth (MAY) workshops provide an unprecedented way to break cultural silos in the classroom. The program exposes students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to South Asian arts as a means to integrate cultures, introduce students to different art forms and most importantly, express what they’ve learned in their own voice. M.A.Y. workshops are available in approximately 258 schools in the Peel District School Board and to over 150,000 students.
MAY is possible through the generous support of Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Pearson, Port Credit Community Foundation and City of Markham

they see themselves in the work and it’s
0:05
not something that is unrelatable to
0:07
them and that’s really what makes an
0:10
enriched classroom and an enriched
0:12
artform because you’re getting all these
0:15
wonderful children in a room just
0:18
exploring and being creative and having
0:21
permission and feeling safe to do work
0:24
that they feel passionate about and I
0:27
think that’s what is unique about the
0:29
MEI program as well because we are
0:32
working in South Asian art forms and so
0:34
the chances of a student especially in
0:37
diverse schools seeing a reflection of
0:41
their culture their identity reflected
0:44
back to them is priceless and it’s
0:47
something that I wish I had when I was
0:49
growing up it’s very important to get
0:53
the youth engaged and involved in the
0:55
arts but they don’t really have a way to
0:56
get involved and to really engage with
0:59
it on a tangible level so the fact that
1:01
you’re bringing all the elements in
1:03
interactive workshops with people that
1:05
are you know at the peak of their crafts
1:07
then getting the youth to participate in
1:09
the art forms like is a beautiful thing
1:11
I’ve been involved in the program for
1:14
about the last two or three years now
1:15
and I come in as a dance artist so I
1:17
bring a little bit of urban hip-hop
1:19
combined with Bhangra and Bollywood
1:21
having a program this is just amazing
1:24
there’s absolutely no way that they can
1:25
succeed in math and language and
1:27
anywhere else if they can’t think
1:28
creatively and think outside the box
1:30
each student brings a wealth of
1:32
experience ideas creativity curiosity
1:36
personality but I think that’s the whole
1:39
beauty of the may program is that it’s
1:41
supposed to be building those bridges so
1:43
I always come in working with a little
1:44
bit more pop in hip-hop
1:45
so it’s songs that they’re familiar with
1:47
and then right when we segue into the
1:49
Bhangra there’s a lot of similarities
1:52
everyone should have the opportunity to
1:55
have a may program in their classroom if
1:59
you’re a teacher if your student if
2:00
you’re a parent I feel that if I was a
2:04
student I would want to have exposure to
2:07
professionals that look like me that
2:10
reflect my experience or that even
2:13
just provide me with the possibility
2:16
that I could do this for a living
