i’m darren i am from the band black

0:01

creek reign in the band destiny and i am

0:04

part of the bollywood monster mashup and

0:06

the mad artist development program this

0:08

year

0:16

i was born and raised over here i don’t

0:19

necessarily look like it

0:20

i look like i’m indian but i’m actually

0:22

from the caribbean i’m supposed to like

0:24

chutney music i hate it i’m just kind of

0:26

in between everything so it’s been

0:29

for a long time it was really hard for

0:30

me to really find not only what i liked

0:33

but what i also was good at

0:36

and i settled on the reggae pop funk

0:39

like that sort of thing

0:43

[Music]

0:48

we were a different band before we were

0:50

called heaven’s muse before

0:52

and then when we split up um we decided

0:55

to be something home like black black

0:57

creek drive is not far away from where i

0:59

am and most of us grew up around there

1:01

so we we were black creek drive for

1:03

about a week and then you’ll never

1:05

believe it there was a band in japan

1:06

somehow also called black creek drive

1:08

and we’re like what seriously so

1:11

we changed it and my girlfriend at the

1:13

time had suggested the name rain black

1:14

creek rain and we’re like

1:16

not a terrible idea and so for the last

1:18

like five four or five years we’ve been

1:20

blackberry grain

1:22

i don’t want none of your time

1:30

so as any good musician

1:32

women are my muse they always have been

1:34

they always will be

1:35

specifically women from my past

1:37

because if they’re not here anymore then

1:39

that’s when it’s best to write about

1:40

them apparently

1:42

so because no we can’t possibly write

1:44

about them when they’re here that’s

1:45

where’s the art in that they have to be

1:47

years like gone and now ah yes now i

1:50

feel it because

1:52

because men i try to watch what i eat

1:55

get exercise all of those things because

1:57

those are so important

1:59

for for mental health for physical

2:00

health for everything

2:02

the best performances i do are the ones

2:04

where i didn’t get as much sleep as i

2:06

should have i didn’t warm up the way i

2:08

would have liked to i haven’t eaten in

2:10

several hours but i’m just tossed on

2:12

stage and it’s go for it and it’s almost

2:14

as if i let everything out in how i

2:16

sound like there’s a mental at ease and

2:19

i’ve obviously done

2:21

great performances where i was able to

2:23

warm up i was able to eat i was able to

2:25

sleep i was able to do all of those

2:26

things because now all of that’s not on

2:28

your mind and now you’re able to just

2:30

step on stage and go for it but there’s

2:32

almost a sense of desperation in your

2:33

body now especially for seasoned

2:35

performers they’re almost like a sense

2:36

of all right a few more songs and then

2:38

you can eat all right a few more songs

2:40

and you can take a nap right

2:42

i know what i signed up for and and come

2:44

hell or high water you gotta deliver

2:51

[Music]

2:56

you got me like crazy

3:02

[Music]

3:06

you don’t come to rehearsal to learn

3:07

your part you come to a rehearsal to

3:09

learn everybody else’s part

3:11

because especially in a group

3:12

performance you need to know when to

3:14

come in when to not come in you need to

3:16

know what your queue is what your cue

3:18

isn’t when the song stops when a song

3:20

starts so on and so forth

3:22

and all of these things and the energy

3:24

of a live rehearsal with multiple people

3:27

is significantly different than

3:29

just a solo rehearsal right it’s why

3:32

like stage pro it’s why stage fright is

3:35

a thing right like the actual energy and

3:37

and ambiance of a stage

3:39

being in front of people and around

3:41

people is a completely different energy

3:43

than when you’re by yourself so it’s

3:45

going to be a challenge for people to

3:46

very quickly step out of their home

3:49

rehearsals into

3:51

the big rehearsals

3:53

and kind of

3:55

get themselves in that proper headspace

4:01

[Music]

4:25

let them all pass on

4:29

[Music]

4:37

[Music]

4:41

who has hurt all mankind just

4:45

to save his own beliefs

4:48

it’s such a classic that like like

4:50

everybody will know it

4:52

the indians caribbeans everybody’s gonna

4:55

know it it’s gonna that’s gonna be a

4:56

show stopper for sure it’s it and even

4:59

when it was first out in the 70s it was

5:01

always like a unity unifying type of

5:03

song and it’s one of those things where

5:05

the message is timeless and it’s

5:07

something people still need to hear

5:09

so now that i can record at home i

5:12

realize that at most performances the

5:15

monitors on stage are

5:17

at least the vocal part of it are never

5:19

as loud as they should be i would sing

5:21

and i do a 45 60 minute set and i’ve got

5:23

enough stamina that i can do that no

5:25

problem but i would feel at the end of

5:27

all of these shows like

5:29

i’d feel it was strained i’d feel like i

5:31

had almost pushed too hard and then i’m

5:33

looking at other guys like ed sheeran

5:34

and john mayer and they’re doing these

5:36

back-to-back shows these three nights

5:38

and three shows and three nights kind of

5:40

i’m like how the hell are they doing

5:41

this like

5:42

is there something that i’m missing is

5:44

and now i realize that i was singing too

5:47

hard and the monitors need to be pushed

5:49

much much louder i shouldn’t have to

5:51

strain i should be able to do

5:52

back-to-back shows no problems

5:56

[Music]

6:07

rarely do you see like a brown guy front

6:09

man in bands in toronto at least in like

6:12

rock funk blues bands they exist make no

6:14

i’m not a unicorn or anything like that

6:16

they exist

6:17

but there’s not that many of them right

6:19

so this felt something that was catered

6:21

to

6:22

they like the reggae stuff they like the

6:24

pop stuff they like our skill set and

6:26

they actually have a plan to promote us

6:29

it wasn’t the type of thing where

6:30

they’re like here’s some money go away

6:33

are these workshops here’s this

6:34

information here’s how we’re going to

6:36

help you a very detailed

6:39

list of steps let’s go through it

6:41

together

6:42

it feels like a real mentoring program

6:44

and that’s that’s one of the main

6:45

reasons that i was attracted to this you

6:48

they have all the funding in the world

6:49

where i can take them legitimately

6:50

seriously they’ve been very transparent

6:52

about everything so far there’s been

6:54

lots of communication lots of open line

6:56

here’s our number call us and contact us

6:58

every time this is the most

7:00

sincere effort to build artists so far

7:03

that i’ve ever been a part of and that’s

7:05

been ultra attractive to

7:15

i ever tell me about maxine you know

7:16

what i say i don’t know but i know
