Community Love for our #MonsterArts for Youth (MAY) Workshops

2020

#MonsterArts for Youth (MAY) workshops are an unprecedented way to break cultural silos in the classroom. This free program exposes students to South Asian arts as a means to integrate cultures, introduce students to different art forms, and most importantly, express what they’ve learned in their own voice. M.A.Y. workshops are available in approximately 258 schools in the Peel District School Board and to over 150,000 students.

MAY is possible through the generous support of Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Pearson, Port Credit Community Foundation and City of Markham

I think what they love about the program

0:01

is they see themselves in the work and

0:04

it’s not something that is unrelatable

0:07

to them so just today I had a student

0:09

come up to me and say I’m a Buddhist and

0:12

so when you were talking about the art

0:14

form of the mandala as a Buddhist

0:16

practice I felt personally connected to

0:19

it and I think that’s what is unique

0:21

about the MEI program as well because we

0:24

are working in South Asian art forms and

0:26

so the chances of a student especially

0:29

in diverse schools seeing a reflection

0:33

of their culture their identity

0:35

reflected back to them is priceless and

0:39

it’s something that I wish I had when I

0:41

was growing up I’m very very happy that

0:44

monster r/t is doing the may program

0:46

because I feel it’s also important to

0:49

kind of connect with other artists

0:51

teachers kind of network as well in

0:55

terms of like just understanding who are

0:57

the people out there who are actually

0:58

kind of working to the same common cause

1:01

as you

1:02

I love teaching I love teaching kids and

1:05

to people to go into a high school

1:06

environment and to share my passion for

1:08

teaching and dance and then also it for

1:10

it to be a cultural experience it’s

1:12

awesome to really feel like you belong

1:14

and like that your culture is accessible

1:18

in this kind of you know environment I

1:20

think is a really wonderful thing and I

1:22

think it’s also really great that kids

1:24

who aren’t of the culture get exposure

1:26

to it so that’s my favorite part of it I

1:28

think just like bringing people together

1:30

and like uniting them through dance

1:32

we’re here at Indus community services

1:34

and we just did a launch event for our

1:37

new monster arts for youth at heart

1:40

program which is our seniors program in

1:43

collaboration with industry mmunity

1:45

services we are providing professional

1:47

South Asian artists to give workshops

1:49

for free to the seniors in our community

1:52

in music dance poetry and all the other

1:56

art forms as well the collaboration

1:58

between these two amazing organizations

2:00

demonstrates their leadership in

2:02

delivering impactful programming to

2:04

residents of Mississauga we are proud to

2:06

have funded this project there were very

2:09

positive impact or not

2:11

members we all look forward eagerly to

2:14

participate in this group events as you

2:17

might have noticed already we are all

2:20

full of energy excited and full of zeal

2:23

for life this past Friday July 20th and

2:34

Saturday July 21st

2:35

Mississauga was home to the eighth

2:37

annual Bollywood monster masher one of

2:39

the largest South Asian events in Canada

2:42

the event brought over 80,000 guests to

2:45

our Mississauga downtown core at

2:46

celebration square the two days of

2:49

festivities celebrates South Asian arts

2:51

and culture of food and entertainment

2:53

the benefits to our community extend far

2:56

beyond two days the festival directly

2:58

creates many long-term full-time

3:00

positions 30 full-time seasonal

3:02

positions for you

3:04

hires over 200 artists and performers

3:06

and provides community service

3:08

opportunities for over 300 volunteers

3:10

every year it also generates millions of

3:14

dollars in visitor spending and supports

3:16

dozens of local Mississauga businesses I

3:19

was pleased to attend the Bollywood

3:21

monster mashup with my colleagues from

3:22

Mississauga lakeshore and Mississauga

3:24

Erin Mills and provide greetings from

3:27

our premier Doug Ford hi this is Bonnie

3:29

Crombie mayor of the great city of

3:31

Mississauga tonight we’re at

3:32

celebrations square at the largest South

3:34

Asian festival in all of Canada at the

3:37

Bollywood Monster Mash up that this is a

3:39

very special time in Mississauga’s

3:41

history it’s a big transition time you

3:44

know we’ve had great leadership and

3:45

we’re moving on to write the next

3:47

chapter of our history and events like

3:49

bollywood monster mashup are defining in

3:52

our legacy

3:53

they’re a perfect example of a great

3:55

success story they are introducing

3:58

people to new things to performances

4:00

that they didn’t know much about that

4:02

they’re experiencing and enjoying that

4:05

they’re finding that they’re not alone

4:06

that they other people are doing the

4:08

same and that these organizations are

4:10

showing how diverse our city and

4:13

province is I think it’s just a great

4:15

way to bring people together and the

4:18

beauty of Vikas and his genius is that

4:21

he’s always fusing

4:22

together it’s just such a multicultural

4:24

society so the fact that he you know

4:27

takes everybody of every color and every

4:29

talent mixes different types of music

4:32

and instruments together it’s just a

4:34

beautiful you know rendition of what the

4:37

country is I think I remember coming to

4:39

Canada in 2011 and I was losing my

4:42

community a lot and 2011 had the first

4:45

Bollywood mashup right so I didn’t have

4:47

a chance to attending one of the event

4:49

and trust me it feels like home this is

4:50

the South Asian Committee where they

4:52

come from different countries you know

4:53

what bind them together is the culture

4:54

and music which comes from Bollywood as

4:56

is the perfect platform to bind them

4:58

together
