hi
0:01
my name is marina mooney i’m a soprano
0:03
with the amadeus choir and a frequent
0:06
bartender at amadeus functions welcome
0:08
to our celtic kitchen party
0:11
now you may know that we often have a
0:14
bar at our celtic party and since we
0:16
can’t be live and in person we thought
0:18
we would do a few cocktails
0:21
um show you how to make them so that we
0:23
can all share a drink together in lieu
0:26
of being together in person let’s hope
0:29
for next year the celtic celebration has
0:31
a long history of some serious scotch
0:34
drinking
0:36
uh but as my last name is mooney i’m an
0:39
irish heritage and so i thought i would
0:41
do some irish cocktails now the irish
0:44
are well known to be great drinkers but
0:47
they don’t have a great selection of
0:50
cocktails
0:52
basically it’s beer
0:54
or whiskey unless you go with the green
Guinness
0:57
drinks and i’m not going there so the
1:00
beer we’re going to showcase here is
1:01
guinness guinness is the iconic beer of
1:04
ireland it’s the most popular beer in
1:07
sales and accounts for 25
1:10
of all beer sales in ireland it’s been
1:12
made in dublin since 1759
1:15
and at one point guinness breweries was
1:17
the biggest brewer in the world but that
1:19
was back in the 1880s however guinness
1:22
is still the largest producer of stout
1:24
in the world and ireland continues to do
1:27
its part it is the third largest
1:29
consumer of guinness in the world
1:33
number one is great britain and number
1:35
two you may be surprised to know is
1:37
nigeria nigeria actually has four
1:39
breweries in its country
1:41
number four is the u.s and number five
1:43
is cameroon
1:45
so you might not know this but forty
1:47
percent of all guinness sold in the
1:49
world today is sold in africa
1:52
so guinness is now truly an
Guinness Cocktail
1:54
international beer so guinness cocktails
1:57
are often layered and you do that by
1:59
pouring a layer of guinness over another
2:02
liquid we’re going to choose a half and
2:04
half which is the most popular of this
2:06
type in ireland and that uses guinness
2:09
and
2:10
harp lager so you can use any lager or
2:13
even a nail if you want
2:15
and your technique which i will
2:16
demonstrate in close-up
2:18
is
2:19
you pour in the heavier density liquid
2:22
first which is the lager surprisingly
2:25
guinness and all its stouty goodness is
2:27
actually the less dense of the tube
2:30
so
2:31
half
2:32
lager and then carefully pour the
2:34
guinness over a spoon
2:37
to break
2:38
the flow
2:39
and allow the layers to form
2:43
[Music]
2:45
other variations are using
2:49
cider and that’s called a black and gold
2:52
ireland’s a big producer of cider but so
2:54
is ontario i tried it with this
2:56
brickworks cider
2:59
called queen street 501 it’s even done
3:01
with champagne or other sparkling wine
3:04
it doesn’t layer as well but that
3:06
combination is called a black velvet
3:08
some tips i find that this works better
Tips
3:12
if your
3:13
beers and other liquids are good and
3:16
cold the living works better
3:18
and for those who aren’t fond of
3:20
guinness is very strong taste a sweet or
3:23
semi-sweet version of cider or bubbly
3:25
often mellows out the flavor quite
3:27
nicely
3:28
so if guinness is not going to work for
3:30
you
3:31
then
3:32
it’s irish risky
3:34
one thing about irish whiskey is you can
3:35
be sure it’s always 100 irish it cannot
3:39
be called irish whiskey unless it’s
3:41
aged bottled distilled all in ireland
3:45
there are many excellent types of irish
3:47
whiskey i’ve got two fairly common ones
3:50
here
3:51
and the recipe is simple
Recipe
3:53
one part whiskey
3:55
to two parts of your mix whiskey and
3:57
ginger is the most common of the irish
4:00
whiskey mixed drinks so to make that you
4:03
just fill your glass about half full
4:05
with ice
4:06
you can measure this very accurately if
4:08
you want
4:09
or not it’s one part of irish whiskey
4:14
one little trick you can do is just put
4:15
in enough to
4:17
float the ice
4:19
and then two parts or to taste
4:22
a ginger ale
4:24
now you could also use
4:27
soda water
4:28
lemonade
4:29
reduces whatever you want
4:36
a bit more than two to one
4:39
[Music]
4:41
to taste
4:42
[Music]
4:45
and you can top it off
4:47
with a lime if you like
4:49
finally
4:50
i know that the scotch drinkers are not
4:52
going to have any of this
4:54
you know who you are but that’s fine
4:57
just pour yourself a single ball
4:59
sit back
5:01
and enjoy the party
5:05
[Music]
5:13
you
