Celebrating Local Arts - errant artSpace

2022

As part of the AGGV’s 2021 Celebration of Art — a new virtual program throughout the month of July — we have joined forces with arts and community groups in the CRD. We have collaborated with these fantastic organizations to create videos that highlight the important work that they are doing in the arts community. These short clips include tours of studio and gallery spaces, interviews with artists, members, and administrators working with these institutions, and even one virtual “Imagination Station”, which invites you to get creative from the comfort of your home. Watch the whole series to learn about all the great things that local arts organizations are doing in your community.

hi i’m sue mcarthur and i’m one of the

0:02

coordinators of aaron artspace

0:04

and i’ve been involved with this group

0:07

for about 10 years

0:09

we started we started down on cook

0:12

street

0:13

in a place called galleries 1580

0:17

and the intent really had been

History

0:21

people were looking for a space an empty

0:23

space to have an art show

0:25

so we saw this building that had a for

0:27

rent sign on it and we

0:29

phoned them and they said oh artists do

0:32

you guys want to write us a proposal and

0:33

maybe you could have a studio here

0:35

so we did and we were there for four and

0:37

a half years

0:39

and then they sold the building so we

0:41

moved over to rock bay and we were there

0:44

for a year and then they sold that

0:45

building

0:46

and then luckily we found this one so

0:49

we’ve been here for four years

0:51

we have eight artists six studios

0:55

and a small exhibition space yeah

What we do

0:57

basically what we wanted to do was we

1:00

wanted to have

1:00

a space that where we could provide

1:03

affordable

1:05

studios for artists so the main focus

1:07

was really the

1:08

the artists studios but then the side

1:11

was the

1:12

was the gallery exhibition space so um

1:15

here at errant we have um

1:18

shows monthly shows from the artists

1:20

that are here the erin artists but then

1:22

also community artists supply to do

1:24

shows

1:25

so we’ve had quite a lot of people

1:28

doing shows here and now that people are

1:31

getting to know us more we’re really

1:32

busy and we have quite a wait list to

1:33

have shows

1:35

so often people want to just do a

1:36

quickie so we’ll have a quick

1:38

weekend pop-up show and that’s been

1:41

popular and it’s been popular with

1:43

some of the grad students at visa

1:46

vancouver island school of art had their

1:48

grad show here

1:49

just last month and that’s kind of how

1:52

we started it was a good it was a space

1:53

for emerging artists

Artists

1:56

and the artists that are here some of

1:58

them have been with us ever since

2:00

we started at um gallery 1580

2:03

and lately we’ve had a turnover so we do

2:05

have some new artists

2:07

i just moved from toronto

2:10

in march and i had a space in toronto

2:14

and so this was such a great place to

2:18

land

2:18

and meet community and

2:23

i feel really grateful that i can be

2:25

included

2:27

in this and in the being able to show my

2:30

work

2:31

and this allows me to

2:34

to keep working and i come here almost

2:37

every day of the week

2:39

so it’s fantastic the show in the

Exhibition

2:42

exhibition space right now is a pop-up

2:44

show so there’s

2:45

pieces from all the eight artists and

2:46

from amber mcgregor who’s our social

2:49

media coordinator my name is amber

2:51

mcgregor

2:52

and i am the social media coordinator of

2:55

aaron artspace

2:56

um i’m not actually an active

2:59

artist within the space itself um

3:02

but i got involved uh because my husband

3:05

is one of the artists here

3:06

kyle lebinski so i’m here kind of

3:09

supporting

3:10

him and supporting all the other artists

3:12

that are here and i just um

3:14

kind of work to make the

3:18

space more i guess noticed it’s

3:20

interesting to see

3:22

kind of what happens when artists move

3:25

into the space and like how they kind of

3:26

interact with each other and each

3:27

other’s work and

3:29

how that changes their work and um

3:33

i know that’s always really interesting

3:34

to kind of be a part of the gallery has

3:37

been open

3:38

um since last september like

3:41

so cobot happened and then everything

3:42

kind of shut down and then um

3:46

we were kind of given the the green

3:48

light to reopen as long as we followed

3:49

the protocol so that’s been really good

3:51

like just to have

3:52

like the space open and have artists

3:53

able to show their work and

3:55

um have the public able to come in and

3:58

look at work um safely

4:00

which has been kind of an important

4:01

thing just over the last little while

4:02

because a lot of

4:03

places have you know had to shut down or

4:05

you know haven’t had

4:07

um that ability so it’s been i think

4:10

like a really good kind of thing and

4:11

also for the community here just to have

4:13

a space to kind of

4:14

be able to go do something you know like

4:16

go outside

4:18

yeah so that’s been really good

4:39

you
