the banana rag started as the voice of
0:03
the town fool since it was hard to get
0:07
the idea about what I was up to and
0:11
initially I was in Bastion square and I
0:14
thought this would be a way of
0:16
communicating it getting more time
0:18
happening with people who are coming by
0:20
the by my tables and chat get their
0:24
stories because that’s what I always had
0:26
started out with the stories and then
0:28
when the September rolled around and
0:31
started to get cool and I was realizing
0:34
let’s tourists are going to last much
0:36
longer where where else is my audience
0:38
no I decided that I would try their
0:41
schools and I approached a number of the
0:45
schools during lunch hour or recess with
0:48
my banana rags and just handed them out
0:50
to the students of course I was dressed
0:53
in costume wasn’t the most elaborate
0:55
costume at that point but the kids were
0:58
all keen to get anything free and knew
1:00
they didn’t know what it was and through
1:03
that distribution I found a few schools
1:07
that were actually opened having me come
1:09
in and do things with the students which
1:12
was basically teaching art during the
1:14
lunch hour or after school with
1:17
different projects that they are
1:21
supplementing their their idea of art
1:23
and the Victoria Day parade entry was
1:27
the first sort of substantial thing that
1:30
came out of those and I think it was the
1:32
students at SJ Willis junior high school
1:35
the elementary kids I have one
1:37
photograph of being on set upstairs
1:40
might have been in South Park school
1:42
with all the kids with bananas so there
1:45
was various events but it was really
1:47
the Victoria Day Parade I think came
1:50
after the other event that I did during
1:53
that period was an April Fool’s Day
1:56
event at the hillside shopping mall and
1:58
at which I had materials for people to
2:02
decorate a banana or because some of the
2:05
merchant said well but it’s the easter
2:07
weekend you’re not going to just do but
2:09
then the stuff so I said okay well we
2:11
can decorate Easter eggs as well which
2:13
whatever and the mall supplied the
2:16
materials at the tables and the chairs
2:18
and stuffin and I was there for the
2:21
quite a long call actually and I was
2:23
offering some of my fools hat some goofy
2:26
things as prizes or you know whatever
2:29
and it was a busy day because the
2:32
shopping mall you know and there’s
2:34
something to do besides shop whoa what
2:37
an idea I’m surprised they went for it
2:40
actually but anyway so that was
2:42
basically what the banana rag was
2:44
documenting what I’d done or setting up
2:47
sort of an invitation to some other
2:49
events
