What is curating
0:14
curation or curating within the context
0:17
of an art gallery museum
0:19
is the work that people do to conserve
0:22
and preserve objects of heritage
0:25
whether they’re works of art or other
0:27
types of things and other different
0:28
types of museum collections
0:31
so it really the root of it is to
0:33
actually to to take care of
0:36
but in contemporary world today we use
0:38
curating to refer to the work that
0:40
people do when they create exhibitions
0:42
so that would be working with artists
0:44
working with museum collections to
0:46
create exhibitions and i would also say
0:49
that recently um the word curating has
0:51
expanded even more and to focus on
0:54
working on things like programs or
0:57
community outreach
0:58
basically things that create programs
1:00
that help to both interpret the art that
1:03
we see in exhibitions
1:05
so one can have a curator of education
1:07
as an example who
1:08
works with
1:10
audience members and schools and
1:12
educational groups
1:13
and it’s kind of curating the content of
1:16
those educational programs
Who become curators
1:21
most people who become curators or go
1:23
into the world of curating are people
1:26
who start out loving something loving
1:28
some form of collection and you know
1:30
within the context of their claim
1:31
alberta is people who love art and so
1:34
most people who become curators in an
1:36
organization such as ours are people who
1:38
have either gone to school to study to
1:40
be an artist perhaps they studied art
1:42
history
1:42
uh and or perhaps they kind of come came
1:45
up through a community grassroots
1:47
organization but most people love art
1:50
they love to hang out with artists they
1:52
talk about art they go to museums they
1:54
read about art and that sparks their
1:56
interest in actually becoming to work in
1:58
the field
1:59
working to work with museum collections
2:01
and curate exhibitions
How did you become a curator
2:06
interestingly i didn’t actually go into
2:08
this profession intentionally i didn’t
2:10
start off you know going into university
2:12
to be a curator but i did love art and i
2:14
went to my undergrad studying
2:17
studio art so as a practicing artist but
2:19
also art history
2:21
and it became clear to me over the
2:22
course of my undergrad that
2:24
i was not so great at being an artist i
2:26
didn’t actually um make very good
2:28
artworks but i was really interested in
2:30
talking about it really interested in
2:32
studying the history of i’ve been really
2:34
interested in
2:35
working with artists and so that really
2:37
is what took me on the path to being a
2:38
curator
How do you engage the community
2:43
the art gallery has lots of education
2:44
programs that are geared towards
2:46
children and youth
2:48
so we are trying to actively engage
2:50
children not just through um
2:52
hands-on art making but also kind of
2:54
critical thinking about art we have a
2:56
really robust transitional school school
2:58
tour program art classes and the other
3:01
thing that’s really exciting for us is
3:02
we do have a youth council which i
3:04
believe we’re recruiting for members
3:06
right now so having you be involved in
3:09
actually
3:10
the creation of programs and ideas
3:12
through the active pga youth council is
3:14
another way we’re trying to engage you
Surprising facts
3:19
i think there’s two surprising facts
3:21
maybe that the art gallery of alberta is
3:23
the oldest cultural institution in the
3:25
province uh we were founded in 1924 so
3:28
we’ll be having our 100th anniversary in
3:30
2024 uh which is a kind of i don’t know
3:34
how well known fact that is but the
3:35
other interesting thing about our
3:36
building uh which opened in 2010 is that
3:40
although it’s perceived by everybody to
3:42
be in a brand new building in fact we
3:44
preserved 65
3:46
of the old evident archaeology building
3:48
in this new construction
3:53
trying to explain humanity to aliens i
3:55
think is an enormous task and i really
3:58
wonder what senses the aliens would have
4:00
that would be the same or different than
4:02
ours but assuming they have a sense of
4:04
sight
4:05
i think i would use the camera i think
4:07
the camera is something that now in our
4:10
21st century
4:12
we rely on to represent ourselves in the
4:14
world in all sorts of different ways and
4:16
i think with a camera
4:18
we could try to explain the kind of
4:20
huge depth and diversity of humanity to
4:23
you
4:29
you
