Favorite things to curate

0:11

so my favorite things to curate i think

0:14

it’s hard to think about things in

0:16

curating because for me it’s really

0:18

about ideas

0:20

and um

0:21

i’d say some of the things that really

0:24

make design interesting are um how

0:27

design can inform where are we headed

0:29

what does this mean

0:30

for individuals of many different types

0:33

and uh

0:34

what kinds of impact can it have so it’s

0:38

it’s probably more ideas than things

What inspired you to become a curator

0:43

so

0:44

i i’m not sure that i’ll have the most

0:47

fulsome answer for this question because

0:49

i didn’t set out to become a curator um

0:52

but what i would say is uh to be open

0:55

and curious i think that’s something

0:57

that led me into this field was just

0:59

kind of wanting to know more wanting to

1:01

discover wanting to understand

1:04

why something relates to something else

1:06

and and how does it influence the way we

1:08

behave in the way we think so

1:10

that’s kind of how i walked into this uh

1:13

as

1:14

an activity or as a profession

What is your curators playlist

1:18

um on my curator’s playlist there’s nina

1:21

simone lori anderson and in particular

1:24

landfill which is um a

1:27

album done with the kronos quartet

1:29

um i really love the liberation music

1:31

orchestra song for the whales

1:34

and then there’s a podcast by comrade

1:37

black and tricia rose

1:40

and then some basics that i always go to

1:42

are kind of like morton feldman

1:44

rothko chapel which is one of my

1:46

favorite albums of his and then there’s

1:49

a remix of steve reich by howie b that’s

1:51

on my playlist

1:53

and i could go on there’s a lot but

1:55

those are kind of some samples

What are your favorite things about being a curator

1:59

there’s so much it’s it’s a wonderful

2:01

opportunity to meet all kinds of people

2:03

and to really explore things that you

2:05

hadn’t thought about before so i really

2:07

love

2:07

reaching out with kind of a question and

2:10

wanting to learn more and it turns into

2:12

something that

2:13

becomes a dialogue and then eventually

2:14

becomes something that is part of an

2:16

exhibition um so just that ability to

2:19

find connections between ideas and

2:21

people and

2:23

also being able to challenge the

2:25

assumptions that i have and to say and

2:27

to realize that there’s something else

2:29

there’s a different perspective out

2:30

there so

2:32

those are some of my favorite things

What are your favorite artists

2:36

louise bourgeois is definitely up there

2:38

for me as one of my favorite artists

2:40

i’ve admired her

2:42

strength and

2:43

what she brought to her art in a very

2:46

strong way for a long time

2:48

i love alfredo yar’s perspective

2:50

on um

2:51

observation in particular and what he

2:53

sees and how he’s able to respond to

2:56

what he sees

2:57

and douglas cardinal is a wonderful

3:00

architect i have to bring an architect

Whats your favorite architect

3:05

i’ve been thinking about this and um

3:08

you know i think one of the challenges

3:10

with design is that um it’s all about

3:13

how we frame the question and so i was

3:15

thinking um earlier today about you know

3:18

like robert robert oppenheimer who

3:20

created the atomic bomb that was created

3:22

around constraints of a particular thing

3:24

but it became disastrous as an outcome

3:27

um carl benz who got his first patent uh

3:31

for the fuel powered automobile and

3:34

where that’s led to the types of cities

3:36

that we design and all kinds of

3:38

activities related to

3:40

the culture that we live in in cities

3:43

and so sometimes it’s about the

3:45

questions that we don’t ask um you know

3:47

if carl bentz had thought about climate

3:50

change would he have created the same

3:52

object um

3:53

so i kind of landed on this thought of

3:57

how do we explain humanity to aliens

4:00

um

4:01

maybe it’s an exchange and maybe it is

4:05

a vessel something that holds something

4:09

that human gives to someone else and

4:11

that could be food that could be water

4:13

that could be ideas but it’s it’s an

4:15

empty vessel that is passed

4:18

from generation to generation but also

4:20

maybe just

4:21

from friend to stranger

4:24

so that’s the best i could come up with

4:29

you
