greetings and welcome to amigi chamber ensemble’s first concert of the 21-22
0:16
season first there was american beauty then there was american pie and there was
0:23
american dad but before all that there was american berserk
0:29
in fact the term was coined by philip roth in his landmark novel
0:34
american pastoral and by that he meant that from time to time
0:40
america has this innate and ingrained capacity to go absolutely
0:47
bonkers furiously insane or insanely furious any way you want to look at it and
0:54
we have tried to incorporate all these ideas in tonight’s concert
1:01
to paraphrase abraham lincoln’s famous words this is music of the people
1:07
by the people and for the people so we have the spiritual world of
1:13
armenian american composer alan jovanes we have the spirit songs of
1:19
african-american composer t.j anderson we have the work of
1:26
quintessential of all american composers the very unique charles ives
1:32
and we have two giants of contemporary american music
1:37
john adams and john corliano we hope you enjoy
1:43

i think when most people think about contemporary music composers they think of people who are really
5:03
really serious just sitting there trying to dream up weird and wonderful sounds but the composers that we have today
5:10
not only have great imaginations but they also have good senses of humor tj anderson for instance who wrote
5:17
shouts the piece for cello and piano that we’re playing was asked well what does he use for
5:22
inspiration for writing a melody he says well any man or a woman in a bathtub can
5:30
think of a good tune john adams also had a great sense of humor
5:37
and he wrote this whole book of alleged dances for string quartet
5:43
and in this he uses some very very strange and bizarre names like toot nipple and alligator escalator
5:51
so i’m sure you will enjoy this music because it’s a lot of fun to play
5:56
and i think you’ll like listening to it

hi everybody thanks for tuning in to american berserk and welcome to the last piece on our program the red violin chicon by john
41:10
corliano i first saw the movie the red violin in 1998 in the theaters and i was super
41:16
excited because you know i’m a violinist and i get to see a movie about a violin
41:21
i couldn’t have expected what it would turn into though this is now one of the most iconic movie soundtracks ever
41:27
written and in a way brought the violin out of the classical music world a little bit and into the you know just
41:33
the public realm of people who love music um there’s no difference between
41:39
classical violin and movie violin of course it’s all the same but this now has become one of these pieces which has
41:45
transcended the classical music world and is known by almost everybody who has ever gone to the movies or listened to a
41:51
concert the chacon is a series of chord progressions that mr corliano used to
41:56
tie together what he called a very episodic movie and on top all kinds of beautiful themes
42:03
pyrotechnics for both the violin and the piano thanks for listening hope you enjoy it
