Dara, Head of AGA Education and Learning, is back with another tutorial on making paint from a humble ingredient: the egg. Egg tempera is a medium of painting made up of egg yolk and pigment that dates back to medieval times and was popular in the creation of murals and icons like the ones in our exhibition ‘In Golden Light: Orthodox Icons from Annunciation to Ascension’.
Eventually, egg tempera was replaced by oil painting as aesthetics changed and painting methods evolved. Lucky for us, the medium has stood the test of time and is easy to try out at home.
