Adorned at Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week with Jaimie Isaac

2023

Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week (VIFW) showcases the power, beauty and evolution of authentic Indigenous art and design. Founded in 2017 by Joleen Mitton, VIFW brings global recognition to Indigenous fashion designers and artisans while providing talent development to Indigenous youth through mentorship, safe business practices, cultural appreciation, fashion shows, arts and cultural events. VIFW seeks to facilitate reconciliation and deeper understanding between Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through fashion and community.

In celebration of Adorned – an exhibition exploring fashion’s connection to the land and culture – Jaimie Isaac, Chief Curator and Curator of Adorned, is taking AGGV audiences down the runway! The interviews captured during this closing show, titled Spirit of the West Coast, feature just a few of the amazing designers from VIFW 2022, and are an extension of the conversations in the AGGV’s Adorned exhibition.

so exciting to see you again on the

1:01

runway you’ve been all over the world

1:03

with your clothing line and just want

1:06

first for you to be introduced to

1:08

everyone so elem

1:10

en uh

1:13

awesome

1:24

Anna Lee boydgood

1:27

foreign

1:30

so as I said before we’re really excited

1:34

to be interviewing you and to be here to

1:37

celebrate

1:38

um your line at the Vancouver indigenous

1:40

Fashion Week

1:42

in the last little while and since I’ve

1:45

met you with the adorned exhibition that

1:48

your beautiful work is exhibited in

1:49

you’ve been all over the world can you

1:52

tell some of the places that you’ve that

1:54

your line has traveled to

1:57

uh most recently we actually have come

2:00

back from New York we have been in

2:03

Florida

2:05

Ottawa Ottawa and now we are here at

2:08

Vancouver indigenous fashion week and we

2:10

are so excited to be here

2:12

so how does it feel in terms of being in

2:16

a self-determined indigenous space and

2:21

showing your work in this kind of space

2:22

versus the more altogether diverse

2:26

spaces that you’ve shown in and what

2:28

does this mean to you in terms of

2:29

cultural abundance

2:31

well I I think in looking at our parents

2:34

career in the 90s there wasn’t anything

2:36

like this so when we look at now we fast

2:39

track to all of the amazing designers

2:41

and artists and even performers just to

2:46

see the diversity of indigenous art and

2:48

culture that that is on display I think

2:50

is really amazing

2:53

I think it’s really exciting to see so

2:56

many indigenous groups getting together

2:57

supporting each other lifting each other

3:00

up there is enough space for every one

3:03

of us to be here and we need to share

3:05

that space and we need to acknowledge

3:06

all of the other wonderful designers

3:08

that are here as well and just really

3:10

support each other and uplift each other

3:12

and I think that’s one of the most

3:13

beautiful things that we can do as uh

3:16

Juan wolfimo so First Nations people is

3:19

lift each other up and I think that’s

3:20

going to be the game changer for how

3:23

people see our our clothing designs and

3:26

our art and everything so it’s just

3:28

really exciting and it’s beautiful to

3:30

see what they’ve done here at Vancouver

3:32

edition is Fashion Week

3:34

and like you’ve said it all right there

3:37

I’m very excited again to see your work

3:40

and just one last question do you think

3:43

there’s a Resurgence uh right now I

3:46

think there is definitely a Resurgence

3:48

like what uh when our parents were doing

3:49

fashion shows there was a handful of

3:51

designers and then

3:53

uh there was kind of not too much

3:55

happening for a little while and now

3:58

it’s like it’s booming and you’re seeing

4:00

uh the the children of the designers

4:02

like like my sister and I you’re you’re

4:05

seeing still Dorothy Grant and Pam Baker

4:07

who’ve been working really hard

4:09

tirelessly for many years and then

4:11

you’re seeing everything in between so

4:13

you’re definitely seeing a lot more uh

4:15

contemporary looks modern looks you’re

4:18

seeing mixes together a lot of

4:20

resurgence with reclaiming what belongs

4:22

to you and what you’re allowed to share

4:24

and I think everybody’s doing a really

4:26

good job of doing that Resurgence but

4:28

also sharing beautiful pieces of art

4:30

whether it’s cultural or non-cultural

4:32

so definitely a Resurgence and I I don’t

4:36

think it ever went away I think maybe a

4:38

few things were asleep and now we’re in

4:41

this Reawakening and that’s where that

4:43

Resurgence is coming from is that it was

4:45

always there and it’s stronger so it’s

4:48

really exciting to be a part of that

4:50

I think it’s so important that you said

4:52

reclaim because when you walk through

4:55

museums or hear Elder stories our

4:58

ancestors have been making adornment for

5:02

their family members for time Memorial

5:03

so it’s so wonderful to see uh elalam

5:08

um as a design house that is actually

5:11

carrying that forth and picking up from

5:13

your parents and their parents and their

5:16

parents

5:17

thank you we are excited to be here and

5:19

we’re really excited to share our art

5:21

and we hope you enjoy the show and music

5:23

and music yes more music language

5:27

thank you so much have fun tonight

Joleen Mitton

5:39

uh the absolute Powerhouse behind the

5:43

Vancouver Independence Fashion Week

5:45

um Julian where are you from I was born

5:47

and raised in Vancouver I spent most of

5:50

my life in eastbound but I did grow up

5:52

in Asia for the good portion of my life

5:55

but my tribe is from Alberta I’m Curry

5:58

and you know Urban indigenous person so

6:01

uh what got you into fashion uh actually

6:04

it was by accident

6:07

um I wasn’t chosen to be a model years

6:10

and years ago and then yeah just kind of

6:13

like stuck to it just because it paid

6:15

the bills and got me out of my situation

6:17

something I wasn’t really interested in

6:19

I was going to be a police officer

6:20

that’s what I wanted to be

6:23

um but now I’m here so we’re doing it

6:25

and you’re also a basketball player yes

6:28

yeah well I play for All My Relations

6:31

which you can see on shirt right now

6:33

um we are the champions of the all

6:35

Native basketball tournament uh as of

6:37

right now we’re defending our title in

6:40

February and it’s going to be a big

6:42

situation I think um yeah that’s so

6:44

exciting well

6:45

um I wish you all the best for that

6:48

um you killed it yesterday on the runway

6:50

when someone passed you a basketball and

6:52

you dribbled it on the runway so that

6:54

was kind of amazing to see yeah this is

6:56

like that was impromptu yeah

7:00

well you created such an amazing event I

7:03

think I was almost in tears yesterday

7:04

with just seeing all the beauty

7:07

um that you brought together with the

7:08

designers

7:10

um the models and everyone that came to

7:12

enjoy it this place was packed and so I

7:16

just congratulate you

7:17

um hugely just one more question can you

7:19

talk a little bit about what that means

7:21

in terms of cultural abundance through

7:24

adornment and

7:27

fashion as art hmm like as indigenous

7:31

people I think we’re all super creative

7:33

and I think it’s in our blood it’s in

7:35

our DNA

7:37

um I think when you go to ceremony or

7:40

like I was just adopted into like a

7:43

bella bella family so just watching

7:45

Potlatch and how everyone is distressed

7:48

like to the nines right like you’re

7:50

dressing for the next generation and

7:52

um I think that’s a big part of it uh

7:54

the endorment piece is like loving

7:56

yourself that self-care and like I know

7:59

I kind of dress like a street kid but

8:01

like

8:02

um I do also like to dress up like you

8:04

can see it on the run when I was walking

8:06

I just think that uh yeah I think you’re

8:09

you’re dressing for other people you’re

8:11

dressing for yourself you’re dressing

8:12

for your ancestors and I think that’s a

8:14

big part of Vancouver indigenous fashion

8:15

and proud to be indigenous so

8:18

have to wear indigenous clothing and the

8:19

designers also get to have an indigenous

8:21

model it’s like something special sacred

8:23

yeah

8:25

amazing well thank you for creating this

8:28

self-determined empowered beautiful

8:30

space and I wish you good luck on the

8:32

rest of the all of your endeavors thank

8:35

you

JB The First Lady

8:43

hi hey what’s up I’m so excited to be

8:46

interviewing you JB the first lady where

8:48

are you from

8:50

I am from the new health nation which is

8:52

balakula BC and I’m also from Six

8:54

Nations I’m anadaga and I’m wolf Clan

8:57

amazing so you must be excited about

9:00

being here tonight tonight is like a

9:03

dream come true like as a young person

9:06

like when I was like nine years old I’d

9:08

watch fashion television on City TV and

9:11

I would just like would dream about the

9:13

clothes the material the lighting the

9:16

pictures like I just like loved fashion

9:20

so much as a young person and like I

9:23

went more into music but now today is

9:26

like my Evolution my Pokemon evolution

9:28

to design so like really like excited

9:33

for tonight yeah you must be as this is

9:36

your debut fashion so you talked a

9:39

little bit about it feeling like

9:42

um a birth and and as a introduction to

9:47

being on this kind of stage of course

9:49

you’re used to it being a musician and

9:52

that’s what I think a lot of people know

9:54

you for but this is really exciting that

9:56

you’re that you’re debuting it here it’s

9:58

so awesome to be a part of you know

10:03

an event where you know our ogs really

10:06

paved the way for us and then we get to

10:08

celebrate with them and like

10:12

they inspired us from like Pam Baker

10:14

like totally inspired me

10:17

um Tyler Allen Jacobs like he actually

10:20

taught me how to sew regalia because I

10:23

would do my own power regalia I dance

10:26

women’s traditional and he taught me how

10:30

to like make patterns and all of that

10:32

and then I was able to make my own

10:34

family regalia and ribbon skirts and now

10:39

like

10:40

um also button blankets because I’m from

10:42

the West Coast as well so it’s like so

10:46

important I love making regalia so I

10:48

want to make regalia for the red carpets

10:52

absolutely well you’ve been preparing

10:54

for this been all your life

10:56

um we’re at a really important event

10:59

here for the Vancouver indigenous

11:01

Fashion Week how does it feel to be

11:04

in this place at this time

11:06

so incredible like we’re lighting it up

11:10

we’re giving life and us as indigenous

11:14

people we are the best storytellers if

11:16

it’s in visual art

11:18

film television music and now design and

11:22

we’ve been fashion designers since time

11:26

and Memorial so to be here is like

11:30

so exciting to celebrate with each other

11:32

especially after pandemic oh and that’s

11:36

for sure and you had mentioned earlier

11:37

we’re at the Queen’s theater and you’re

11:40

addressing indigenous queens and that is

11:43

something to celebrate it is so this

11:46

something is celebratory because we are

11:49

still here you know they didn’t kill the

11:52

Indian and the child

11:53

we’re looking fashionable when we look

11:57

so good like us as indigenous people we

12:01

have whatever we step out it’s like

12:03

Grand entry every day because we got our

12:06

flashy earrings we got our beautiful

12:08

like you know

12:11

ribbon skirts we got our beautiful

12:13

jackets like men like of course we would

12:18

have this type of event and for you know

12:21

I’ve known Jolene since I was a teenager

12:22

we grew up in eastvan together so now to

12:25

see even her Evolution and like she’s

12:28

really creating the culture and pushing

12:31

the culture forward so big shout outs to

12:34

Joey absolutely Powerhouse and also

12:37

bringing Powerhouse people together

12:40

and the grand entry is the runway so I

12:43

wish you good luck tonight I’m so

12:45

excited oh my gosh I’m so excited and I

12:49

my next step is I want to be on the red

12:51

carpets in Hollywood I want to be on the

12:53

Met Gala like that’s my like ultimate

12:56

goal is to Adorn our indigenous movie

13:00

stars our indigenous models so I’m

13:03

excited

13:05

um for the future yeah red power on the

13:07

red carpet is your future

13:11

okay language thank you thank you so

13:14

much All My Relations
