As part of the AGGV’s 2021 Celebration of Art — a new virtual program throughout the month of July — we have joined forces with arts and community groups in the CRD. We have collaborated with these fantastic organizations to create videos that highlight the important work that they are doing in the arts community. These short clips include tours of studio and gallery spaces, interviews with artists, members, and administrators working with these institutions, and even one virtual “Imagination Station”, which invites you to get creative from the comfort of your home. Watch the whole series to learn about all the great things that local arts organizations are doing in your community.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is located on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples, today known as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. We extend our gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to live and work on this territory.

0:07
so my name is amy
0:08
van drimlin and i’m a pro i guess an
0:11
arts programmer here so
0:14
yeah and what i like about this space is
0:16
where it is and
0:17
how it is and i feel like it’s like a
0:19
really accessible
0:22
entry point for artists of all different
0:25
levels and whether you’re emerging or
0:28
you’ve never had a show before and you
0:29
just have a good idea
0:31
or even more like more established
0:33
artists definitely have done stuff
0:35
at the ministry in the past and it’s a
0:38
good mix
0:38
of a working space so there’s a bunch of
0:42
artist studios here and different
0:44
all different kinds of artists who are
0:45
working in this building every day and
0:48
then we have our gallery
0:49
which is available for exhibitions
0:52
and events and stuff like that we have a
0:55
pretty strong
0:57
vision and mission but they’re they are
0:59
also
1:00
pretty casual so i think it’s just more
1:03
of an
1:03
ethos of the space which is being
1:06
accessible
1:07
on our website it says we don’t want to
1:09
see your cv ever
1:10
so we don’t care about people’s
1:13
credentials
1:14
we care about their ideas and
1:18
therefore i i would hope that we
1:21
continue to be
1:22
a space where someone who might feel
1:24
uncomfortable with the normal
1:25
art world or art in quotations could
1:28
come
1:28
and approach us with an idea
1:32
so that’s sort of the main the main
1:35
mission
1:36
i would say in a nutshell of the
1:38
ministry so i have a series of
1:40
film and sound screenings that i put on
1:43
here so where i can get musicians in and
1:45
doing live score for films and stuff
1:47
like that
1:48
connecting with different curators using
1:50
the space in different ways having
1:53
interactive exhibitions and stuff like
1:56
that
1:56
and i think it’s a space where anyone
1:59
walking by
2:01
you know we’ve met so many people who
2:03
just walk by when we have our doors open
2:04
and
2:05
that’s what’s so cool about the artists
2:07
in residencies that we have here in the
2:08
summer
2:09
that we had last year for the first time
2:11
was that we met
2:12
a lot of neighbors and made connections
2:15
with people in the neighborhood that we
2:17
probably wouldn’t have made
2:18
if we just had the the door closed and
2:21
like less kind of stuff happening
2:23
so yeah to me that means a lot because i
2:25
live just down the street so
2:27
it’s my neighborhood and so it’s really
2:29
special to have this type of thing here
2:32
so the window gallery is our other main
2:35
gallery that we run we have a lot of
2:38
interest in the window right now there’s
2:39
a lot of
2:40
people who want to show their work there
2:43
because
2:44
of how accessible it is and it’s just so
2:47
cool to have that space
2:49
available to us in downtown victoria and
2:52
it’s provided by
2:53
cenote which is a bar and restaurant
2:55
just around the corner so they actually
2:57
own
2:57
that window gallery and instead of using
3:00
it for advertising or
3:02
they could they could you know be
3:04
renting it to someone but instead
3:06
they’ve donated it to us
3:07
to use so it’s it’s really great
3:11
to have that as kind of rare so yeah
3:13
we’re hoping for more
3:15
window gallery opportunities in other
3:17
locations as well i think
3:18
yeah my name is austin
3:21
i’m a artist based here
3:25
and so i’m participating in our kind of
3:28
summer residency that we’re doing here
3:30
and so i got to take over the gallery
3:33
space for two weeks
3:34
and build a number of things and then
3:38
kind of do this
3:39
open studio so a number of the works are
3:44
projects that i’ve been
3:47
sort of working through for a while over
3:50
the past
3:51
um maybe year or more
3:54
and then a number of them are kind of
3:55
new more experimental things
3:58
so this has been a really um i guess
4:00
meaningful
4:01
location for myself just because it was
4:04
kind of the first place i
4:06
came to um after finishing my degree
4:10
and uh just full of really welcoming
4:14
friendly people who are also wonderful
4:16
artists here
4:18
um and yeah it’s just been a very
4:20
accessible place
4:22
to kind of start start my career
4:26
as an artist and to really like
4:29
begin experiencing what that’s like
4:31
outside of a school environment
4:34
yeah so that’s that’s why that’s been
4:35
nice for me
4:39
oh we’ll wait for the old
4:42
car to drive
4:44
[Applause]
4:49
on our website it says we don’t
5:14
you
