Celebrating Local Arts - arc.hive

2022

As part of the AGGV’s 2021 Celebration of Art — a new virtual program throughout the month of July — we have joined forces with arts and community groups in the CRD. We have collaborated with these fantastic organizations to create videos that highlight the important work that they are doing in the arts community. These short clips include tours of studio and gallery spaces, interviews with artists, members, and administrators working with these institutions, and even one virtual “Imagination Station”, which invites you to get creative from the comfort of your home. Watch the whole series to learn about all the great things that local arts organizations are doing in your community.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is located on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples, today known as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. We extend our gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to live and work on this territory.

hi i’m allison bigg

0:03

welcome to the archive artist run center

0:06

first of all we would like to

0:08

respectfully acknowledge the communities

0:10

and nations

0:11

in whose territories we work and live

0:13

the lake wonkan

0:15

then with sonic peoples archive artist

0:19

run center

0:21

has a gallery we’ve been here since 2017

0:26

we’re a gallery but we also have nine

0:29

working

0:29

artists in different studio spaces

0:32

around here

0:36

in the five years we’ve been open we’ve

0:38

had at least

0:39

60 shows in this little gallery

0:42

the show right right now is called what

0:45

the cup opens today

0:47

and it’s put on by the victoria mud lake

Victoria Mud League

0:52

hi i’m leah five and lev of the victoria

0:54

mud league

0:55

currently the victoria medley consists

0:57

of myself

0:59

marina manson and sarah leckie we are

1:01

three early career ceramic artists in

1:03

victoria bc

1:05

so what we wanted to do with the mud

1:06

league was to just bring focus to a lot

1:09

of the early career

1:10

ceramic artists in victoria as well as

1:13

all around bc what we did with the

1:16

what the cup show this month is that

1:19

we’ve asked

1:20

all our favorite artists and friends to

1:22

create something

1:23

out of the ordinary out of their regular

1:25

production line

1:27

and to just kind of go wild with

1:29

creativity trying new techniques so that

1:32

is what we have with what the cup

Archive Artist Run Centre

1:34

so my name is regan rasmussen and i’m

1:36

one of the gallery coordinators at

1:38

archive

1:39

artist run center and as alison big has

1:42

mentioned

1:43

we have been an art society

1:46

since 2017 so i’d just like to mention a

1:49

little bit about our mandate

1:51

as an artist run center we’re really

1:53

really proud

1:54

of being able to um support a lot of the

1:57

emerging contemporary artists

1:59

in victoria and we

2:03

through our seven juried exhibitions

2:06

throughout the year

2:08

really wanted to promote diverse

2:10

practices

2:11

with the arts and the artists in the

2:13

community so we have endeavored to

2:15

include

2:16

not just with our studio artists but

2:18

also with

2:19

the exhibiting artists um

2:22

new media as well as traditional media

2:24

we’ve had musicians we’ve had artists

2:26

and we’re really proud of that rich

2:28

collaboration that we’ve been able to

2:30

build over the past

2:31

five years and i think that probably in

2:34

terms of our mandate other than

2:36

facilitating these kind of diverse

2:38

practices

2:38

and honoring new media and experimental

2:41

media

2:42

it would really be that we have built

2:45

upon in five years

2:47

a lot of bridging of community within

2:50

the arts community itself

2:51

and an intergenerational component with

2:54

people who may not be familiar with

2:56

the arts and artist run centers and so

3:00

we’ve embarked upon three separate

3:03

project grants

3:05

that have enabled us to have wide

3:07

community outreach

3:08

one of them was a makeshift textiles

3:10

festival

3:11

and then subsequent to that we had two

3:13

bridge community festivals

3:15

due to the pandemic the last one was

3:18

purely online

3:20

but due to allison and a number of other

3:23

people that were facilitating that we

3:25

were able to still have

3:26

uh demos and we were able to invite

3:29

people to artists studios

3:31

in the community and have little

3:33

passports where people could

3:35

partake in the activities and upload

3:37

them to one of our instagram

3:39

hashtags so it gives me a great pleasure

3:42

to

3:43

be part of welcoming people to this

3:45

space and to

3:47

come and be part of what we have to

3:50

offer here

4:11

you
