As part of an interpretive project for the AGA’s exhibition ‘Nests for the End of the World,’ visitors were invited to hand-knit cords inspired by Luanne Martineau’s sculpture, ‘Knitter Woman.’ In this tutorial, you will learn how to hand-knit a cord at home! In the end, the video asks you to add your cord to the activity station. Read below for how to finish the cord.

This activity takes between 10 to 20 minutes.

1. Start your project by making a loop to secure the thread.
2. Place the loop on your index finger.
3. Start the weave. With your palm facing you, take the “working end” of the yarn and weave it behind your index finger and your middle finger, over your ring finger, and under your pinky finger. Once you reach the end of your hand, loop the yarn around your pinky and continue the weave, this time in the alternate pattern.
4. After it wraps around your pinky, the yarn will go under your ring finger, over your middle finger, and under your index finger.
5. Repeat this sequence.
6. Wraps around your pinky, the yarn will go under your ring finger, over your middle finger, and under your index finger. Once finished, you should have two loops around each finger.
7. Pull up the bottom loops. Starting with your pinky finger, take the bottom loop of yarn and pull it up, over (the top loop), and off of your finger. Once finished, the bottom loop should now be on the back of your pinky finger.
8. Repeat with the next three fingers. Pull the bottom loop up, over, and off of your middle, ring, and index fingers. Once finished, you should have one loop on each finger.
9. Continue the weave until your rope is as long as you want it. Stop with one loop on each finger, just after you’ve pulled over the bottom loops. This is where we would ask you to add your cord to the activity station.

To finish your cord:
10. Take the remaining loop from your index finger and flip it up and over, onto your middle finger. Now, pull the bottom loop up from your middle finger and over to the back of your hand. Continue until you have one loop on your pinky.
11. Slip the loop off your pinky. Be careful to not let the loop close once it is off your finger.
12. Cut the working end of the yarn a few inches away from the loop. Be sure to leave a few inches of extra yarn at the end.
13. Tighten the other end. Return to the original tail and also give it a tug to tighten off the other end.
