Hi Michel (and any other folks interested,)
VoIP technology is just applications built on top of protocols that deliver
content over the base internet protocols. Similar to SMTP delivering email,
HTTP delivering web pages, telnet, FTP, SSH, Skype, TeamSpeak, WebEx, etc.
Your VoIP phone or gateway just sends and receives bits of recorded voice
instead of web pages, pictures, tweets, etc.
When an ISP gives you internet service, it doesn't matter whether it is
cable or DSL or wireless (cell phone data), they will generally carry
whatever internet protocols you want to communicate with. So unless Roger's
was specifically blocking VoIP internet traffic (which they don't) then you
can run any VoIP service over their network (just like you can with Skype
which is a VoIP service using a proprietary protocol instead of SIP which
is the popular open standard.) When anyone provides you with a VoIP
service, what they are renting you is DID (Direct Inward Dialing Number - a
regular old phone number) and allowing you to use their network of servers
to play your bits of recorded voice over the POTS (Plain Old Telephone
System) and record the other end of the conversation, break it into little
bits, and send it to your IP phone. They also provide you with a SIP
address (like an email address) you can share with your VoIP-savvy friends
and avoid going out to the old system at all. They may also provide a
service to connect your 911 calls to a national 911 call centre. These
services can be anywhere and offer all sorts of different features. It
doesn't matter which ISP you use with which VoIP provider. Rogers and
TekSavvy are internet service providers who *also* offer VoIP services if
you want one-stop shopping. But you don't have to go with them.
P.S. If everyone had IP Phones and gave out SIP URIs (if you have your own
domain or get email and voip from same provider, it can *be* your email
address) then you wouldn't need the POTS or even VoIP providers any more.
You would just dial an email address. You can see these starting to roll
out in proprietary (non-SIP standard) ways with FaceTime, Skype, and Google
Hangouts/Voice. After a painful bunch of years where they all try to "win",
they will all end up using standards and POTS will fade away.
