While I think of it, here's another interesting hack I saw at HAL2001.
It is a wall of 9x4 VT420(?) terminals connected to 4 RS-232 terminal
servers with one for input:

Part of the reason I think of it is I was telling Andrew O'Malley at
our Mini-Maker Faire about a 80x25 Nixie tube display being used to play
Doom via aalib.
