[Lab] social diagram to look more social?

I'm making some articles on social network theory and here's a typical
diagram. I know there are a lot of artsy type people around this list and
I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas to make a diagram like this more
clear or interesting?

This is a chart to categorize social interactions based on closeness of the
social tie and the degree of reward there is for the action.
