Routes of Exile: A Moroccan Jewish Odyssey
Since Jewish traders settled in the Land of the Berbers more than 2,000 years
ago, Moroccan Jewry has had a unique culture, mingling Jewish and North African
influences. It also constitutes one of the most successful models of political
and religious coexistence in the Islamic world. But with the upheavals of the
twentieth century, the question is whether Moroccan Jewry will retain its character
and identity into the twenty-first century. Routes of Exile traces the history
of this branch of Jewry from the first Berber Jews to the vast migration and
new tensions set off by the creation of the State of Israel. The film takes
a particularly probing look at the most recent stage of the journey social and
political changes in Israel, the struggle for identity in France and Canada,
and the increasing isolation of the remnant that remains behind in Morocco.

I am interested in the history of the Muslim world and modern Jewish history,
with a particular research focus on the Jews of Morocco. My recent book concerns
the Moroccan Jewish community and the Sephardi world in the late 18th and early
19th centuries, examined through the activities of Morocco's most important
royal agent in this period, Meir Macnin. This study identifies a break in Sephardi
history at the time of Emancipation in Western Europe, marking the decline of
the trans-national Sephardi Diaspora and the beginning of a demarcation within
the Jewish world between "Western" and "Oriental" Jews.
It raises new questions about Muslim-Jewish relations and the relationship of
Jews to the state in Morocco.
My first book was concerned with urban society in Essaouira, Morocco's principal seaport in the 19th century, and I continue to work on the history of the Jewish community of Essaouira in an effort to study the transformation of Moroccan Jewry in the 19th and 20th centuries. While my earlier work focussed more on urban history, my present collaborative project focuses on Jewish communities in rural Morocco living among predominately Berber populations. Out of this research, we plan to publish two books. The first is based on a collection of photographs of Jews who formerly lived in the Atlas Mountains and Saharan Oases of Morocco, offering a portrait of Jews living in rural areas in Morocco during the 1940s and 1950s. The book will reveal, through the photographs and accompanying text, the coexistence of Muslims and Jews and the intermingling of Berber and Jewish culture. The second book in preparation is a study of the origins, history, and culture of Jews living among Berbers. The aim of this study is to further an understanding on how Jewish identity is formed and maintained in a society where the majority of the population (Berbers) was also considered to be a minority. It examines the complexities of Muslim-Jewish relations from a long historical perspective, and how these relations were transformed during the colonial and post-colonial periods.
Another research project is concerned with the Jews of the Arab world and their
experience with colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries. I seek to integrate
the experience of the Jews of Africa and Asia into the history of the modern
Jewish and Muslim worlds.
