[Lab] interactive laser blob, how to affect it?

I attached some chunks of DVD to some spinning motors and then shined a
laser off it. Check out the cool patterns

In this example the motors are running freely and mostly close to the same
RPM.

I want to attach some sensors so a person can affect the patterns.

Any ideas what might be cool?

The best idea I have so far is to put four IR sensors facing up so when you
move your hands round the area it affects the motor rpm...
