   I see that you're looking for Wifi connections, but if you're working in
short ranges and short messages consider BlueTooth. There are some pretty
good libraries for getting bluetooth going between Arduino and Apple
products that greatly simplify all the handshaking and low-level stuff
you'd otherwise have to do to establish a WiFi connection.
   The book: Making Things Talk covers this very well, but you can also
find tutorials about this:
