[Lab] Stinky hot ends

A friend of mine just installed some new hot ends on his 3D Touch printers.

After installation, and when he turned it on, he noticed a foul stench arising from the hot ends.  He said they really stink.

He mentioned that there is some potting compound on the hot ends and thinks that they may not have gone through a bake-out procedure.

Does anyone know if it is “not unusual” for a hot end to stink, and if so, how long does it take for the smell to go away.
