The Reality of Fantasy: an Evening with Visual Designer Mark Coleran

The technological sophistication of consumer electronics seems to increase exponentially over the last decade. Month after month "life changing" gadgets emerge. The massive advancements in industrial design and manufacturing of computing of all scales has enable an equally massive shift in how we interface with technology. In the last 30 years, we have seen user interaction go from physically punching holes in a series of cards to science fiction inspired, graphical user interfaces utilizing humanistic touch, vocal, and gestural commands. It seems like fantasy and reality are in an arms race over superior UI design.

The artists who design these interfaces are at the forefront of a new frontier where art, design, and technology converge. You think you may have nothing to say about interface design, and although some might say it is at its best when it becomes invisible to you, but it is undeniable that it has an effect on your life.

Who designs these interfaces? What must one consider when designing a UI? These are questions we hope to probe in our talk with visual designer Mark Coleran.

Mark Coleran is a designer of both real and fantasy interfaces. He has worked as an Art Director, animator and visual designer for major studio pictures including Mission Impossible 3, The Island, Children of Men, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He has recently wrapped up work on Flow, a workflow visualisation tool produced by Ottawa-based software firm Gridiron.
