Paul, Thanks for the help! I'm glad I can focus only on the driver part of the diagram. I think making an external copy is the way to go. My goal is to get the IR as bright as possible.
I think with the limitations of being powered through USB mean that at most I can power about 5 (?) LEDs: 1 built in and a cluster of 4 on an external driver. So my guess is that I can wire 4 IR leds together (in what configuration - I'm not sure) and then lower or completely remove R4. I'm not sure then what changes are needed for T1 or C8.

Nice gadget!

The circuit ought to work with two IR emitters wired in series in place of the single one on the board: --->|---->|--- (Three in series might work, but the available voltage is marginal.)

An external copy of the driver (R5, D2, D3, T1, R4) would support an additional IR emitter or two. None of the part numbers of the semiconductors in the driver are critical.
Subject: [Lab] Hello

Hi everyone,

In order to dive into hardware hacking, I bought myself this:
http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/USB_IR_Toy_v2 and would like to add
more infrared LED's to it. Since I have all the hardware schematics, and
it has a breakout area, it shouldn't be *too* difficult, but I certainly
will need a bit of help and access to some equipment.
