I tweeted about this app a little while ago (I believe in response to Andrew Plumb who tweeted it before me if I'm not mistaken). It actually looks like a fantastic app, I've played with it a bit, just to feel it out. Adds a lot of capability that sketchup is missing for more advanced projects. At the cost of a little bit more complexity (but it's still fairly easy to use).

It is definitely targeted at makers, it already plays nice with 3D Printers and CNC quite well, without 3rd party plugins to worry about to get things done.

Will be interesting to see where they go with this one!

All,

It looks like Autodesk went a little maker-crazy and designed a free software tool specifically for us! It's based off of Autodesk Inventor and looks to have a lot of surface modeling components to it in addition to solid modeling ability. It also has resources for acquiring community-made models, and services for 3D printing or lasercutting your models - it looks like they might even have a part of the program devoted to doing things like cut your model up to be assembled out of lasercut pieces. But.. I infer this from the picture on their splash page.

Regardless, feast your eyes!

http://www.123dapp.com/

I'd like to sit down with it and get comfortable, and maybe teach a class at the Asylum in it.
