Hey Everyone-<div>If you are curious what will be going on in the lab for the next three weeks, Jason Lewis will be showing some of his new work, which incorporates a Kinect among other interesting interactive pieces, and we'll be having an opening reception of the show on Thursday, March 24th at 6:30PM. Also there will be food, wine and beer so please come on out!</div>

La programmation créative est une pratique matérielle. Ce que Jason Lewis peux créer se développe à travers et en même temps dans les limites du langage de programmation, du logiciel utilisé et de l’écran sur lequel l’ensemble de la création apparaît. Son écriture de la poésie se révèle aussi une pratique extrêmement matérielle, dans laquelle il expérimente comment les caractéristiques des médias informatiques – dynamique, interactivité, traitement des données, sensibilisation au réseau – influencent la façon dont ses mots sont lus. Et, bien sûr, tant la poésie que la programmation sont des pratiques d’écriture. <br>
<br>
Words Found on an Empty Beach fera appel à de grands terminaux à écran tactile interactifs combinés à des écrans tactiles mobiles, des impressions de grand format et de petites sculptures. Ils comprendront une série de textes écrits expressément pour chaque format et intégrés selon la manière spécifique dont nous utilisons le langage pour construire la structure qui sert de soutènement à nos interprétations du monde.<br>

<i>Artiste des arts médiatiques numériques, Jason Edward Lewis est aussi poète et concepteur de logiciels. Il a fondé Obx Laboratory pour Experimental Media où il dirige des projets de recherche et de création impliquant la conception de nouvelles techniques de création et de lecture de textes numériques, le développement de systèmes d’utilisation créative de technologies mobiles, la création d’interfaces pour la performance en direct et l’utilisation d’environnements virtuels pour aider les communautés autochtones à préserver, interpréter et communiquer leur propre histoire culturelle. <br>

Cofondateur de Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (Territoires autochtones dans le cyberespace), un réseau de recherche qui explore la manière dont les populations autochtones peuvent participer à la formation de notre futur univers numérique, Lewis codirige des ateliers combinant les récits traditionnels et la conception de jeux.<br>
<br>
Lewis s’emploie activement à développer des formes d’expression nouvelles et captivantes en travaillant simultanément au niveau conceptuel, créatif et technique. Sa production créative a été montrée entre autres par Ars Electronica Center, ISEA, SIGGRAPH, Urban Screens, Mobilefest and imagineNATIVE et ses essais sur les arts médiatiques ont fait l’objet de plusieurs présentations lors de conférences, de festivals et d’expositions sur les quatre continents. Son travail sur les territoires autochtones dans le cyberespace a été couronné par de nombreux prix.</i>

Creative computation is a material practice. What Jason Lewis can create is enabled and constrained by the programming language he uses, the processor on which it is run and the screen through which it is viewed. His poetry writing is also an intensely material practice, in which he experiments with how the characteristics of computational media—dynamics, interactivity, data processing, and network awareness—affect the ways in which his words are read. And, of course, both programming and poetry are writing practices. <br>
<br>
Words Found on an Empty Beach will employ a combination of large-scale touch screen interactives, mobile touch screen interactives, large-scale prints and micro-sculptures. It will incorporate a series of texts written expressly for each format, integrated through a thematic focus on how we use language to build the scaffolding on which we hang our understandings of the world.<br>
<br>
<i>Jason Edward Lewis is a digital media artist, poet and software designer. He founded Obx Laboratory for Experimental Media, where he directs research/creation projects devising new means of creating and reading digital texts, developing systems for creative use of mobile technology, designing alternative interfaces for live performance, and using virtual environments to assist Aboriginal communities in preserving, interpreting and communicating cultural histories. <br>
<br>
He co-founded and co-directs the Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace research network that is investigating how Aboriginal people can participate in the shaping of our digital media future, and co-directs workshops combining traditional stories and game design. <br>
<br>
Lewis is deeply committed to developing intriguing new forms of expression by working on conceptual, creative and technical levels simultaneously. His creative work has been featured at the Ars Electronica Center, ISEA, SIGGRAPH, Urban Screens, Mobilefest and imagineNATIVE, among other venues; his writing about new media has been presented at conferences, festivals and exhibitions on four continents; and his work with Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace has won multiple awards. </i>
