[Lab] sketchup and zooming

I'm not sure if there are any sketchup experts here but there is one thing
that drives me nuts in the software and I've not come across a way of
fixing it.

When you use the wheel to zoom it only works when you are pointing to a
surface. Does anybody know how to make it zoom all the time and not just
sometimes?
