[Lab] Introduction (and call for aid)

Hey all,

I finally got around to using the mailing list. After taking in the 3D
printing round table last month I thought it would be useful to sign up and
see what it's all about. I've been a member since last fall, mostly playing
with the laser and different materials. I'm interested in hobby
electronics, the Arduino makes it really easy to to into that. I've also
been interested in using the 3D printer but haven't had a chance to get
something ready to try with it.

I do have an introductory query though. I've really enjoyed the Arduino
platform because of it's ease of use and amount of support it has in terms
of libraries and other code. However another part of me wants to really get
into the nitty gritty of microcontrollers, working more on their level. I
had originally looked at programming AVR in C but at that point I thought
why not learn to do that with ARM based microcontrollers? However I'm just
having a problem understanding the subtleties of microcontroller
programming. I understand C but when it comes to programming for them I get
lost quickly. I don't really get how to control pins and timers, or how to
upload code to the controller. I was wondering if anyone knows of any
resources to get started or at least educated on programming for ARM? Any
help would be appreciated.
