DOUBLE MAJOR: Two Speakers, Two Topics, One Conversation

Carleton University Art Gallery invites you to the November edition of DOUBLE MAJOR: Space Robots (Helia Sharif) and Urban Hacking (Janak Alford)

Tuesday, 13 November 2012, 7:00 p.m., at CUAG

Join us for the third installment of our DOUBLE MAJOR lecture series, which features two passionate experts, each speaking for 20 minutes about their subject, after which we?ll have a Q&A addressing both topics. One speaker is from the Carleton community, one is from the Ottawa-Gatineau community. DOUBLE MAJOR is a fun and friendly way to stimulate discussion of seemingly disparate topics, and to make new connections between people and ideas. Props encouraged!

DOUBLE MAJOR is brought to you by Carleton University Art Gallery and the Carleton University Alumni Association.

Helia Sharif is a recent graduate from the Space Studies Program at the International Space University, in Graz, Austria. In addition, she holds a bachelor?s degree in Systems Engineering from Simon Fraser University and is currently pursuing a master?s degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Carleton University. Contributing to the vision team, she is responsible for the design of an autonomous geologist that will replace how the next generation of planetary exploration rovers will process and communicate the information. Helia?s passion for space robotics has exposed her to a broad range of opportunities in the past. For example, after completing a Space Studies Program at the International Space University, she had the unique opportunity of working at the European Space Agency (ESA)?s Advanced Concepts Team. While expanding her expertise at ESA, she developed an evolved distributed vision algorithm, inspired by nature, for training the future rovers to autonomously navigate and path plan. Moreover, as the Field Support Engineer working in the Arctic, Helia has provided assistance on NASA?s K-10 Rovers, Hamilton Sundstrand Space Suits, and the Canadian Space Agency?s Operation Space Medicine in the past.

Janak Alford is an inventor, developer, hardware hacker, artist, programmer, débrouillard, architectural designer, technician, film and artistic director, animator, and founder of prototypeD Urban Workshops Inc. Janak is just one of a dynamic and exciting group of many young artists and professionals in Canada whose talents cross too many boundaries to continue to define with any single label. A product of formal arts and architecture education and self-taught down-and-dirty hands-on work in many fields, Janak's skill set represents a model for learning in the 21st century. Using prototypeD as the nexus for a great many creative endeavours, he is actively engaged in developing products, designing architecture, urban planning, animation, software development, and many more exciting projects. In 2012, Janak has developed a major film project, Generation Q, which premiered at the National Gallery of Canada, as well as hosted DCentred Showcase, an exhibit of how the maker movement is changing entrepreneurship and the urban city around us. Using self-built 'hacked' tools for design, Janak continues to work to blur the boundaries between arts and technology and integrate the high-tech to produce unique and exciting hybrid experiments.
