The Squares of Venice Squares, crossroads: meeting places, places to discuss or exchange opinions. A kaleidoscope of perceptions, impressions, and knowledge accumulated while travelling through a city. But our vision is often guided by the single representation of place and memory, as we find our bearings in the course of our daily lives. The artist must go beyond the standard and practical reference points. If everything were simply representation, where would the poetry be? So we are free to observe, and no one can keep us from combining things in a fantastic way. Hans J. Mettler attempts to move us beyond our usual way of looking at things, shattering our habitual perceptions, and bringing a new creativity to how we see: allowing us to see differently. After Queenís Square and Berlin Square, Hans J. Mettler surprises us with an original view of Venice, queen of Italian cities. Ottawa, Autumn 2001 |
