Sarah Hatton, "SURROUND"

Sarah Hatton

November 9 - 22, 2017

Thursday November 9, 2017 5 - 8 pm

Galerie St-Laurent + Hill is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Chelsea based artist Sarah Hatton.

Every summer I seek inspiration and solitude in the Canadian wilderness. This summer I departed with no set agenda, only a distinct yearning to be among islands.

During my retreat, I found myself drawn to the concept of the island as an aesthetic object of comfort and certainty; the provider of a tangible point of focus on a horizon. The more I painted, the more I began to understand the island as a metaphor: one whose fascinating qualities are in direct proportion to their rare and inaccessible state - separated from the rest of their surroundings. Islands naturally stand out and capture your imagination, but do so because they cannot easily be reached, guarded by a garrison of waves that keep all but the most dedicated souls at a distance.

My deep interest in human nature and my insatiable curiosity about the natural world is found throughout my paintings and mixed media work.
I am an artist who sees both light and dark in everything, whether in the painted ripples spreading across the surface of water, or the pathos of a mandala made from the bodies of dead insects. Through my paintings and projects, I observe and explore notions of longing, transition, mortality, and human connections with nature.

Born in Wolverhampton, England, Sarah Hatton lives and works in Chelsea, QC., and is the recipient of many awards. Her works can be found in numerous public, corporate, and private collections throughout North America.
