New paintings and drawings from Ottawa-based artist Rosalind Breen playfully explore archetypes and myths to examine personal allegories. Myth, used as a vessel, allows for reflective contemplation and understanding.
Breen examines popular archetypes and myths such as the stories of Eve, Narcissus, star-crossed lovers and the storyteller as well as characters and tropes from popular culture. Recognizing patterns of these familiar stories in her own life, the artist implements these characters into her mixed media paintings and drawings. Breen employs pencil, oil, pastel and airbrush techniques to create works that play with ideas of translucency, context and the active gaze of the viewer. By deliberating creating areas of openness avoiding determinate detail, the viewer is also invited to add information from their own perspective to the work.
The Sympathetic Myth features paintings of various sizes, drawings mounted and unmounted of various figures and settings. Breen extends an invitation for you to enter the world of these stories and find your own reflections much as she has.
