"Metamorphoses" Thirteen Strings Transforms Traditional Baroque into Stringed Enchantment

First Concert of the Season
Thirteen Strings Transforms Traditional Baroque into Stringed Enchantment
Shedding Light on the works of Rameau, Lully and Strauss; also Ager’s “Talk of the Town”

The world premiere of The Talk of the Town (Toronto Symphony Orchestra Canada Mosaic: A Canada 150 Signature Project) by Ottawa composer Andrew Ager***, opens the concert “Metamorphoses” on Sunday, October 15 at Dominion-Chalmers Church. The 3 pm performance featuring the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jean-Baptiste Lully and Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen establishes the light motif that will accompany Thirteen Strings throughout this season’s repertoire.

With its theme “The Subject is Light”, Thirteen Strings sets out to banish the sometimes constrained musical landscape that the baroque period represents for many listeners. Hence the first concert is aptly named “Metamorphoses” – transformation – where music director Kevin Mallon and his 13 musicians invite the audience to experience the works of Rameau, Lully and Strauss in a new light.

To think Thirteen Strings presents excellent music in an intimate setting is correct; to know the orchestra goes beyond rich sound is to appreciate the gift of interpretation Ottawa’s premier chamber ensemble has. “Metamorphoses” will feature music from Rameau’s Musique de Castor et Pollux*; Lully’s Musique d’Acis & Galatée*, and the aforementioned Metamorphosen by Strauss. (*accompanied by the Junior Thirteen Strings**)

**Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra’s education project, the Junior Thirteen Strings, gives a unique chance for young string players to perform with the orchestra. Following an audition process, the young players are invited to play one concert with Thirteen Strings during the regular concert season. The program also provides a very special opportunity to receive coaching from the principal players of the orchestra and from conductor Kevin Mallon. The Junior Thirteen Strings have also played for the Ottawa Viennese Winter Ball, at the Austrian Embassy for the orchestra’s garden party and also several times as part of the Music and Beyond Festival – at the Ottawa Family, Music Expo, an event for young people and alongside the professional members of the orchestra in an evening concert.
***Described in the Toronto star as "one of Canada's most intriguing musicians", Andrew Ager is regularly commissioned both here and internationally. Over the last few years he has had performances from Monte Carlo to London, Venice, and the USA, where he was Composer-in-Residence in Santa Fe. His opera "Frankenstein" was premiered to enthusiastic reviews in Toronto in 2010. He is currently writing his fourth opera "The Great Gatsby", for production in the United States. "The Talk of the Town" is a picture of the composer's early teen years in Ottawa, much of the time spent wandering about suburban streets in the middle of the night, with long visits to coffee-shops, discussing all manner of things with his nocturnal buddies - The talk of the town...
