The Ottawa School of Art Orleans Campus is proud to present Malleable Geometry, an engaging exhibition by Sarah Rooney, curated by Jakub Zdebik. It’s on display from Monday, January 6 to Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Orleans Gallery located on the main floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre.
On Sunday, January 12, from 1 to 3pm, we are pleased to have Sarah Rooney here in the gallery for an artist talk followed by a reception. All are welcome!
Sarah Rooney creates paintings and photographs through a process of the layering. She seeks to become witness to subtle spatial conundrums, and her works present reflections on shifts in distance, immediacy, and time. Malleable Geometry is a collection of large works that are captivating and reveal a play between surface and the depth.
“Sarah Rooney’s Malleable Geometry puts on display the poetic fluidity of her hybrid practice of painting and photography to reveal how contemporary aesthetics intertwine with modernism.
An abstract green motif that peers out of a grey and ochre surface seems, at first, to be a funky take on Barnett Newman’s zip. But the zigzag’s point of origin is the uneven edge of an old studio radiator.
Vast open spaces and swooping formalist patterns read as stern at first sight yet, under scrutiny, they reveal a playful geography of warm desert tones.
Rooney’s works are not ironic takes on avant-garde aesthetics to satisfy a postmodernist desire for pastiche; they engage, on a sincere level, with real objects and spaces and their artistic transformation.” – Jakub Zdebik
