Bruckner Mass in E minor

Bruckner Mass in E minor

May 26, 3pm

For its final concert of the 2018-19 season, The Cantata Singers will perform an all Bruckner programme. The concert will take place on Sunday, May 26 at 3pm in St. Joseph’s Church, 174 Wilbrod Street.

Artistic Director, Andrew McAnerney has programmed a real treat - an all Bruckner programme! This Austrian composer, organist and teacher, although not as universally known as his contemporary Brahms, composed in Romantic style with its lush rich harmonies but at the same time with dissonances and unprepared modulations from one key to the next.

The concert’s centerpiece will be the beautiful Mass in E minor. A BBC review of a recording of the mass noted that, “Bruckner’s strong Catholic faith produced some of the most wonderful music in the 19th century sacred choral repertoire.” The mass is symphonic in scope, full of lush romantic harmonies and soaring melodies. For this concert, choir will be accompanied by a wind and brass orchestra composed of 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets and 3 trombones. This was Bruckner’s own orchestration. (The reason Bruckner used woodwind and brass orchestration with no strings was that the Mass was first performed outdoors.)

Andrew McAnerney has programmed the concert to intersperse a number of some of Bruckner’s best-known motets between movements of the mass. They include Ecce Sacerdos, Os justi, Christus factus est, Tota pulchra est, and Ave Maria. Each motet is a gem on its own.

Our exciting new 2019-20 season will be announced at the concert. Be prepared for a season of unique programming to intrigue all choral music lovers! A reception will follow the concert for our audience to have a chance to meet the choir Artistic Director and its members as well as learn more about the upcoming season.

The Cantata Singers of Ottawa look forward to seeing you on May 26.
