This month at the Stalk Market, we are featuring artist Danuta Sierhuis. Please join us for the opening reception of Danuta’s first solo exhibition, featuring her “Sculpture Gardens” series of punch needle embroideries.
Jungle Boogie vernissage November 10th, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Exhibition runs November 10th through December 2018.
The “Sculpture Gardens” series of punch needle embroidery pieces arose from a desire to create a body of work that referenced elements of the artist’s educational background in Humanities and Art History. Rendered in a style influenced by contemporary illustration, the series references classical Greek and Roman sculptures of mythological and historical women, such as the Three Graces or Dido of Carthage, and examines the changing notions of feminine beauty and ideals over time.
This is an ongoing series.
Danuta Sierhuis is a self-taught fibre artist based in Ottawa, ON. She is particularly drawn to weaving and punch needle embroidery for their meditative qualities and repetitive motions. Her work explores the relationships between colours, textures and shapes in minimalist designs that are in some way influenced by art history. Her work is in private collections in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Cairo (Egypt). In her other life, Danuta is an arts and heritage professional currently working in art galleries.
